In vR Ops 6, VMs lose their original relationships with Datastores after set up a Hyperic Adapter instance

Hi, folks.

VMs has Datastores as their child object in the vCenter Adapter.

But after config a Hyperic adatper instance, such relationships are lost.

For example,

- Before the problem : VM(vCenter Adapter) - Datastore(vCenter Adapter)

- After the problem : VM(vCenter Adapter) - OS(Hyperic Adapter)

- What I expected : VM(vCenter Adapter) - OS(Hyperic Adapter) and Datastore(vCenter Adapter) = vC Ops 5.8.x way

Did anyone experience this problem?

Ho-Sung

VDP backups always fail regardless of state

Hello,

I have tried to deploy VDP of several versions with the same result in order to evaluate the product but can't get it to backup a single host regardless of powered on or shut down. The deployment were done following the VDP administration guide to the point.

During the process I started out with VDP 5.1 then upgraded both vcenter server and VDP to 5.5 and 5.5.6 respectively with almost the same issue. I have set new vdp users with administrative permissions, redeployed vdp, tested several different vm hosts in all possible states with or without snapshots present but same result. Backup starts but fail in under a minute due to what looks like no permission to read the .vmx file, I can however download and view the file using infrastructure client as long as the vm host is shut down.

I have also tried all suggested solutions that I could find on the kb, no special chars in the datacenter etc.

I am starting to get a bit frustrated and the feeling is that this product is flawed. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The most recent attempts in VDP 5.5.6 give the following log output:

Consolidate troublesom VM script

We have an environnement we support that had constant issues with VM's needing consolidation due to really crappy backup software. The issue was the hosts would almost always have the files locked making consolidation impossible without restarting the hostd service.

Here is a script I wrote up (I havent tested it since making some notepad tweeks, but I think it should still work) it uses plink to ssh into the host and restart hostd.

I think it could be a lot faster if it scanned through the event logs and looked for consolidation informationals than scanning through a 'get-vm' to find out that information...but I dont have access to an environnement to test my code anymore!

We are running 7 hosts on ESXi 5.0 with vCenter 5.0. Total 200 virtual machines are running on them.

Now we want to upgrade Hosts and vCenter server to 5.5. Kindly anyone guide me about the steps required in the migration process step by step? SQL for vCenter is also installed on the same vCenter server. We also have VMWare Update Manager 5.0 installed in our environment.

Thanks in advance...

Unable to deploy OVF-Template from URL (error 503 server unavailable)

Hi,

I'm trying to deploy an OVF-Template following this instructions:

http://www.lazywinadmin.com/2013/03/how-to-deploy-ovf-template-from-remote.html

The OVF-Template is located on a datastore on the same ESXi where I need to deploy it.

The Deploy-OVF-Template Dialog is able to read the OVF-Descriptor as the VMs Name, size, networks etc. are recognized correctly. But when the import starts It instantly runs into:

Failed to deploy

Unable to access file:

https://<ESXI-IP>/folder/<VM>/<VM>-disk1.vmdk

The remote server returned an error: (503) server unavailable

httpClient is already enabled in the ESXi's firewall.

Any help appreciated.

Re-Pointing vCenter to different SSO Instance

Hello!

I'm working for a customer in a arge project upgrading from vsphere 5.1 to vsphere 5.5.

We want to setup a new SSO Instance and reconfigure the components to use the new one. To re-register the vCenter to the different SSO Instance, I tried to run the repoint.cmd (KB 2033620). Unfortunately I got an error regarding the path of the openssl executable. I copied the openssl files to the Java JRE folder (C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\jre) and afterwards it worked. Now I'm getting another error message saying

2015-01-27T11:54:26.932+0100 [c.v.s.c.c.WinSystemTrustStoreManager] INFO  Saving CA certificate for C=US,CN=CA\, CN\=MYHOSTNAME\, dc\=vsphere\,dc\=local to C:\ProgramData\VMware\SSL\C=US,CN=CA\, CN\=MYHOSTNAME\, dc\=vsphere\,dc\=local

java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\ProgramData\VMware\SSL\C=US,CN=CA\, CN\=MYHOSTNAME\, dc\=vsphere\,dc\=local (The system cannot find the path specified)

The Script ends with:

2015-01-27T11:54:26.979+0100 [c.v.s.cfg.ServiceCfgMain] INFO  Return code is: InternalError / 254

2015-01-27T11:54:26.980+0100 [c.v.s.cfg.ServiceCfgMain] INFO  END EXECUTION

It seems like there is something wrong with the path variables in the java script or they didn't get an value.

Could you please help me?

Thanks and regards,

Simon

Major drop in video performance with 7.1 vs. 6.0.5

I see posts re problems with 7 being 'slow' but not sure if this is the same issue:

I have Yosemite 10.10.1 and was running VMWF 6.0.5, which ran very well.

I 'upgraded' to 7.1 based upon the promise of "a whole set of incredible new features" and "Even Better Performance" and "And with powerful 3D graphics and support for OpenGL 2.1 and DirectX 9.0c Shader Model 3 graphics, Fusion 7 will make running highly demanding 3D applications like AutoCAD or SolidWorks a breeze"

The appeal of improved graphics performance was the greatest enticement.

However, the video performance is terrible: jerky video files and software that uses a virtual reality generated simulator now so laggy that it is unusable.

Looking at Windows Experience Index with 7.1:

  • Graphics 2.9
  • Gaming graphics 3.5

With 6.0.5 on the same machine with same Mac OS X:

  • Graphics 5
  • Gaming graphics 4.5

I have:

  • Ensured that I have VMWare Tools correct
  • Reset PRAM on the host computer.
  • Not tinkered with any of the default settings in VMWare
  • Not made ANY changes to the guest OS (W7Pro 32) or the applications I run on it.

I've had to rip 7.1 out and reinstall 6.0.5, simply to 'use' the VM.

Is there a solution to this?

Cant add iSCSI volumes from a different site\location

I have 2 vCenter server\sites, a 5.0 production site and 5.5 test (soon to be production) site. Each site is at a different location on a different network but should have full access to each other. There is a firewall between the 2 sites. Each site also has its own HP iSCSI storage that it uses.

5.0 site

Host IPs – 10.1.17.x

Storage IPs – 10.1.19.x

5.5 site

Host IPs 10.1.43.x

Storage IPs – 10.1.45.x

I created volumes on the storage on each site and tried to add that storage\volume to the other site but it doesn’t see it. I added the storage IPs to the iSCSI initiator dynamic tab and they show up in the static tab. I can ping and traceroute between the hosts and storage at each site successfully. I also made sure the hosts were allowed to see the volumes on the storage itself and the hosts can see the new storage at their own location just fine.

I also have a host at a third location and it’s part of the 5.5 vCenter and there is a firewall there too. I can add storage from the 5.5 location to it fine but not from the 5.0 location. I don't know if this matters but the 5.5 site also shares its storage and datastores with another 5.0 production vCenter and hosts at the same location... not to make things confusing

How to change owner of custom resource

We are going to be creating vCAC Business Groups as a resource centrally in our hosting business office for customers. Part of the provisioning process is to create a vCAC custom resource for the vCACCAFE:BusinessGroup. Once the business group has been provisioned we would like to hand ownership of that object off to the hosting customer to allow them to update the group membership. How can i change the owner of the Custom Resource so that the customer business group owns it instead of the central IT business group, or more specifically i just want the customer business group to be able to run resource actions against the business group object.

Stupidly, I was taken in by the claims for Fusion 7 of

Even Better Performance

However, my VM was rendered unusable as the video performance was terrible. Ran Windows Experience and it proved a halving of video perf.

I am fed up of buying products that don't work, or worse, make false claims.

I have now spent considerable time restoring 6.0.5, which works fine. Thank God for professional software such as Mac OS X, so a restore of application and all the stuff that accompanies it was possible.

If you too are in this position, join this list.

And, no, it's not Apple's fault. 6.0.5 under Yosemite worked absolutely fine.

VMware Player doesn´t work with Windows 10

Hi.

My main operating system is Windows 10 TP Build 9926.

The latest version of VMware Player 7.00 is installed without any issue. And also starts without any problem Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

W7 is beeing used for 2 years, and today I installed W8.1.

But I found a problem. Non of them connect to the internet. I´m connected to the internet, but in both OS I get a red cross on the icon like it show at the picture.

On my Laptop with Windows 8.1 it works fine. Just with my Desktop running W10 TP it ´s showing this issue.

Is it a bug or what can I do to fix it?

I tried in compatiblity mode with Windows 8 and didn´t work.

Can it be fixed?

Thanks for any help

Storage System Upgrade

What risks are there to my ESXi cluster by performing a storage system upgrade such as on a VNX and how serious are the risks (i.e. temporary loss of connectivity during path failover to secondary controller, performance degredation, etc.)?  I am using Fibre Channel and I need to upgrade the OE operating system software on my VNX.

Supermicro on board Intel and Adaptec RAID configuration not recognized in ESXi 5.5 U2

$

Hi, I have a supermicro X7DAL-E r1.1b motherboard that has built-in Intel and Adaptec sata raid controllers. To enable the raid controllers, I go into the BIOS and enable the raid configuration for either intel or adaptec. I have tried both raid controllers and created a raid 5 configuration by going thru each controller's bios. However, when I start going thru the installation process of ESXi 5.5 U2, I don't see one logical drive, all I see are the hard drives that I thought were configured as one logical drive in raid 5.

I know I'm using an old motherboard that is not on the HCL list, but I just don't have the money to be spending on hardware. I really want to make it work if possible. I attempted to download ESXi 4 but it is no longer available . I'd figure I tried using an older version to see if it contains the drivers necessary to make it work and attempt to port those drivers into ESXI 5.5.

I was wondering if anyone has actually gotten this similar problem with a supermicro board and if a workaround or solution was found in which ESXi 5 can recognize the raid configuration? If it can't be done, then it can't be done, it is what it is. I'll just deal with it or save up.

Any suggestions would be appreciated it.

I have a script that will allow me to change VRAM configurations but I need a script that will retrieve the current VRAM configuration of all VMs in my infrastructure.
I need to output the information into a csv file and run this report on a monthly basis...can you help?

Right now my environment is mixed. I have Windows XP VMs set at 4mb, Windows 7 VMs set at 8mb and a sall subset of VMs set to Auto-Detect settings.

I need to be able to retrieve these settings into a CSV file in order to use that information for comparisons trouble-shooting performance issues..

Thank you.

Hi experts,

I want a little help with a script. I have a 4 host HA/DRS cluster. I want to configure HA,Admission control and DRS using power CLI script. I used the below script to do so but this script has no option to set % based admission control and want to set 25% resource as reserved but cannot locate any switch in power CLI guide to do so. Can anyone help me in this. Also I want to use "Intel Westmere" as EVC mode. Can anyone help in completing the command.

Set-Cluster test-clust01 –HAEnabled $True -HAIsolationResponse DoNothing -HARestartPriority Low -HAAdmissionControlEnabled $true –DRSEnabled $True –DrsAutomationLevel FullyAutomated -Confirm:$false
