HTTP-REST Schema import Basic Question

$

I have a system I'd like to manage using the HTTP-REST support in vRealize.

I've been given an .xsd file that contains only the definitions for the Beans used in the interface and doesn't include any of the GET/PUT APIs.

When I import the file, I don't seem to get any benefit or see any new functionality.

My question is, what is the format of the schema file?  Can I import a .wadl (Web Application Definition Language) file?

I did a bit of Googling but couldn't find any examples.

     Thanks for my newbie question,

           Michael

Screen resolution changes reverting back when toggling between Yosemite and Fusion 7

Upgrading to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro forced me to also upgrade from Fusion 5, which had been very stable and problem free. Unfortunately, I've experienced a very annoying behavior of the screen resolution in my Windows 7 virtual session when I toggle between Yosemite and the Windows 7 virtual partition. Any time I make a screen resolution change and change over to the Yosemite side, when I return to Windows 7, the resolution reverts back to the default 2880 X 1800 setting, which requires a magnifying glass to view! Anyone else experiencing this? I couldn't find a thread discussing this behavior, but I know Yosemite is new.

Also, since this is clearly a bug, can someone tell me the best way to report this to VMWare? I'm sure they want to know about bugs, but I don't know the best way to report them. They were very helpful when I discovered the hard way that upgrading to Yosemite before first checking to see if Fusion 5 was compatible (it isn't) was a mistake on my part - they got me back on track and even though it's a bear to find out how to get a live person on the line with the VMWare site, once I did, I eventually got a guy who nailed it - kudos to their tech support team for that.

Product Support for a SuperMicro x10DRL-i server Motherboard

I am looking to custom-building my next server utilizing two Intel Xeon CPU's (each is 6-core) and running in a SuperMicro dual-CPU (x10DRL-i) motherboard.

Are they any issues with running VMWare ESXi on this platform? I tried looking up the product matrix, but it doesn't specify anything, but I would rather ask

the community to find out.

cheers,

Vmotion and NTP drift

$

Hello; Long time lurker here and first time posting.

I have a couple of clusters that are beefy 128GB of ram each 16+ cores per host and 3 servers per cluster and a few different clusters in different environments. All running off 10G fiber to a V7000 SAN appliance.

Now I built these clusters a few months back. So far its been fairly painless process. Have a few hard hitting vm's on them with way more to come.

When I move VM's from host to host my servers are running into NTP drift issues, some nearly 5 seconds. This is on esx5.1 on IBM x series servers. These servers are RHEL/centos 6.3. The guest os's are syncing to a local NTP source not the web.

No matter how I search the only mention I see about NTP drift are from 2004 for esx 3.x if im not mistaken. Anyone encountered this? Anyone have advice? To be fair I do not have vmware tools on the hosts as I really don't see much benefit to them.

Thank you.

Grabbing ESXi Host config info

$

I've been working with / manipulating some host config data to populate other information, but after upgrading from vCO 5.5.2 to vRO 6.0 (standalone), I'm not able to grab anything under the host's config (return type of VCHostConfigInfo).. The long term play (or the biggest need) is to get the Host version, which is I'm pulling like this:

var hostver = vCenterVm.runtime.host.Config.Product.Version;

What the error I'm getting is coming back as is this: TypeError: Cannot read property "product" from null

If I just go and try and run a System.log/debug/whatever on just config, it is returning null.. but I'm 100% certain the host object isn't (I've tried running just the host into a variable and making sure its' getting there). It's reading the host, just not anything under config. Is this something wonky going on in the 6.0 plugin, and if so.. is there any other way for me to pull (at a minimum) the host's version out? I can see when I look at the objects through the Inventory view that version info is being rolled up ...

Thanks!

Appvolumes vs logon time

$

Hello,

I notice that assigning appstacks has a big impact on logon time.

For example assigning an appstack with 7 applications to a group increases logon time with 10 seconds.

Assigning a second appstack with 9 applications increases logon time with an additional 3 seconds.

This means that logon times increases with13 seconds in total for only 2 appstacks. This is a lot.

The broker integration service is there to improve performance, but I cannot see any difference with or without it. Logon times are the same.

Is it normal that logon time increase with 13 seconds with only 2 appstacks assigned?

Should the broker integration service improve logon time?

Are there other ways to improve logon times?

Error #1009 after upgrading from 5.5.6 to 5.8.0

Environment:

  • vCenter Server 5.1.0-1123961
  • ESXi 5.1.0-1065491
  • VDP 5.5.6.180

Followed the usual upgrade procedure:

  1. VDP Appliance snapshotted
  2. Mounted ISO containing 5.8.0 upgrade
  3. Started upgrade from service web console

The problem: logging in on vSphere Webclient produces an "Error #1009" as follows...

undefined.png

Found this KB about "wrong URLs informed on vApp properties", but VDP is not an vApp and there is no such configuration... how can this be fixed without upgrade vCenter Server to 5.5u2?

Update #1: now even rolling back the snapshot to VDP 5.5.6, the vCenter Server still shows the Error #1009... and is also showing the wrong version information on it. Any help we'll appreciate.

VMWare vSAN and Dell PowerEdge R730xd (13G) - Which would be the best practice controller..? Dell PERC H330, H730 or H730P..?

$

Hello,

i want to setup a VMWare vSAN System with 3 of the new DELL PowerEdge R730xd Server.

Every server should host 128GB DDR4-RAM and 1x DELL SSD (200GB Solid State Drive SAS Write Intensive MLC 12Gpbs 2.5") and 7x DELL HDD (600GB 10K RPM SAS 6Gbps 2.5").

But i dont know which Controller i should use.

I searched the VMWare HCL and also the internet for any informations about the new DELL PERC H330, H370 and H730P in combination with VMWare vSAN, but i can't find any information about it.

http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/Dell-PowerEdge-RAID-Controller-H330.pdf

http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/Dell-PowerEdge-RAID-Controller-H730.pdf

http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/Dell-PowerEdge-RAID-Controller-H730P.pdf

The H330 is a LSI 3008 Controller and the H730 is a LSI LSI 3108 Controller. Booth are 12Gb/s SAS controller.

The H330 and also the H730 can passthrough/raw-disk.

But at Disk Controller features and Queue Depth? there is the information that the H330 has only a queue depth of 256..! VMWare recommend 512 and more for high performance systems.

I can't find any information about the H730 so don't know if this one has more or not.

Is it worth to pay more for the H730..? Can I use the more features also in vSAN (e.g. 1GB NVcache etc).

Is there also the option to flash the H330 controller with an IT firmware to get more queue depth..?

Or should i take the H730 for my server..? But this is normally a RAID controller, but as far as i know, RAID controller is not best practice for vSAN cause vSAN don't get direct access to the disks. (this was the problem with the PERC H710 controller).

Can you help me out of "which controller should i buy" dilirium..?

Thank you.

What to include in AppStacks vs Base Image?

Just wondering if anyone has any guidance on whether to AppStack applications like MS Office, Acrobat Reader etc. or provision them in the base image.

We want to minimize login latency and just about everyone requires these applications. We are having an internal discussion about whether we should AppStack them or not and I wonder if anyone has any opinions or suggestions they'd share?

Thanks,

Tim

Configure a wait time for appstacks

$

Hey guys,

We are trying to improve logon times for users (as a good notice, i now takes up to 30 seconds and we still want it to be faster).

Is it possible to add a key to the startup.bat or prestartup.bat file in the appstack to make sure the appstack is attached after the writable volume is attached and the user is allready logged in?

Also, what are the implications of waiting for the login for attaching the appstacks. What i see now is it takes a few secs to build up the startmenu because it has to rearrange it due to the newly created shortcuts that are added through the appstacks.

Thanks.

VICLIENT 5.5 Missing Help File Error

$

Good Day,

My client has noticed, using the viclient, in their new 5.5 environment if you click the "View Troubleshooting Guide" on the summary tab of a datastore cluster or on the "View DRS Troubleshooting Guide" on the summary tab of a cluster you get an error "Missing Help File". I have checked the files manually and they seem to be there and working, as I can open the index.html files manually and get all the troubleshooting guides. When I try the same thing in my lab, I get the exact same error. As I can't find any info on this in the net, does anyone know if this is a known issue? And if so, can you point me in the right direction for the documentation?

Thanks and Regards,

Hello,

we have a esx5i-server with a supermicro-board and a adaptec raid-Controller and 48 GB Ram. On the machine run 8 vms. From time to time (may be days, other time weeks,, other time hours) the Server hangs and all the vms too. We changed all Hardware - the same Problem. I upated the esx - same Problem. The only Thing of helping is to hardware-reset the Server.

Any suggestions? Nothing to see in Protokolls?

Thanks, Klaus

Mouse trapped in Win7 guest with display > 150%

$

I am running VMware on a Yoga3 ultrabook with a resolution of 3200 x 1800. So scaling of guest machines is necessary. An increase of 200% or 250% looks fine.

Problem: In a Windows 7 SP1 guest, overall text size may not be larger than 150%, even not in XP scaling mode. Otherwise, the mouse cursor gets trapped within the vm. It can be released only manually by ctrl+alt.

For comparison: Win8.1 or Win10 guests may be scaled to 200% or 250% without any cursor problem.
