Hi

If i failed my VCAP certification and my VCP expired during that failure and my retake would I need to retake my VCP before attempting the VCAP again.

I guess the question I am asking is whether the VCP certification has to be valid or I have to in the past had a VCP to take the VCAP.?

Thanks

Steve

Google Chrome Plugins

The AppVolumes User guide mentions google chrome plugins but it references the installation guide for instructions and a microsoft KB article that brings me to a dead page.  I can only find the Deployment Guide, which has no mention of chrome plugins.  Could somebody point me to the Installation guide or give me instructions?

Install Chrome plugins to a writable volume, the writable volume must be assigned a drive

letter. To give the writable volume a drive letter, follow the instructions in the Installation

Guide – Appendix to define the Windows registry value WritableVolumeDL and set it to 1. If

you want to hide this drive letter from end users, you can enable the GPO described in the

following MS KB article.

How does one determine whether to increase a VM's available video RAM??

We have users complaining a particular app 'comes up slowly,' their phrase, not mine...

The app is used through Remote Desktop Services over a VPN/WAN to the datacenter.

We are trying to look at other things, cpu, ram, network are not maxed out so far as we can see..

The people have big 24" monitors now and I got to wondering if the RDS hosts' video RAM should be increased from whatever is the default.

The RDS hosts are running Windows Server 2012 R2 with Desktop Experience, themes service turned off, Aero is not being used...

It would be only 5 VMs to change, so I could do it manually if I know what/where to change...

And what would be the recommended new setting??

This is purely research for now, it's also possible we need to increase our site bandwidth.

Thank you, Tom

Tips for having separate Visio 2010 and Project 2010 stacks?

Individually, neither app is an issue, but when applying both of them which ever app is applied last has no issue.  The other one prompts an Office re-configuration at first launch.  It does that just fine and proceeds to open normally, but that's still 60 seconds of inconvenience, every time.

Is there another trick to having separate stacks for these two apps when applying them both?  The Office 2010 suite is installed to the parent image, they're all the same SP level (SP2).

Windows Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Hosts as VMs -- video / RemoteFX recommendations??

We have a Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS farm of five (5) RDS hosts.

What are the best / recommended vSphere video settings for such VMs??
What about RemoteFX -- what are good configuration settings??

Hi Everyone

Trying to increase the queue depth of fnic using powercli and using this command

Get-VMHostModule -Name fnic | Set-VMHostModule -Options "fnic_max_qdepth"=256

However this isnt working because fnic_max_qdepth is a uint value and not int

Does anyone know to get around this ?

Time runs away for virtual machines in Workstation 11

Hi!

I am observing time running away in virtual machines on Workstation 11.0.

I am starting Windows 7. Clock starts, say 9:00:00 after running for about 10 Minutes, the wall clock shows 9:10:00, while Windows 7 guests are at 9:20:xx! Same for other guests: Linux, FreeBSD particular. Same setup, all had time reset at 9:00:00. Time was synchronized using NTP:

- Windows 7: wall clock: 9:10:00, Windows 7 clock: 9:41:00 -> NTP and W32Time didn't sync time any more: offset to high

- CentOS 6.5: wall clock: 9:10:00, CentOS 6.5 clock: 9:24:50 -> NTP didn't sync time any more: no suitable server

- CentOS 7.0: wall clock: 9:10:00, CentOS 7.0 clock: 9:22:56 -> NTP didn't sync time any more: no suitable server

- Ubuntu 14.04: wall clock: 9:10:00, Ubuntu 14.04 clock: 9:13:04 -> NTP kept offset at about 3 minutes

- FreeBSD 11: wall clock: 9:10:00, FreeBSD clock: 9:10:27 -> NTP didn't sync time any more: no suitable server. With local clock a "real world minute" was about 66 FreeBSD seconds.

- NetBSD 8: wall clock: 9:10:00, NetBSD clock: 9:10:01 -> NTP kept offset at about one second or beyond.

Synchronizing time with VMware Tools showed up neary the same results, but Time ran away slower: it took longer to get the clocks between host and guest out of sync:

- Windows 7: wall clock minute is at about 70(!) seconds guest time

- CentOS 6.5: wall clock minute is at about 63 seconds guest time

- CentOS 7.0: wall clock minute is at about 64 seconds guest time

- Ubuntu 14.04: wall clock minute is at about 61 seconds guest time

- FreeBSD 11: wall clock minute is at about 62 seconds guest time

- NetBSD 8: wall clock minute is at about 61 seconds guest time

Without any synchronization time was not predictable. It ran ahead sometimes, then stalled, lagging behind. At a long hoult it got behind for all guests. After 24 hours running all guests had lost about 2 hours -- except Windows: it was 5 hours behind.

Any idea what is going on here? Since the very same runs seamlessly over hours, days, weeks with NTP on an ESXi Host with the very same zoo of operating systems -- any others seeing this with Workstation 11? It's quite not amusing while testing kerberos integration depending on same date and time on all guests!

Workstation 10 - Linux guest freeze and high CPU load on Win8.1 host

$

Hi,

I've been using Workstation for years without problem, until now.

I'm running Workstation 10 on a 64-bit Win8.1 host. I install a Linux guest (x86_64 Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS and Mint tried so far) and the install goes fine. Install VMware Tools which also goes fine.

Everything seems to be running great until, usually a few minutes/hours after the guest is running (and idle), the guest freezes and causes high CPU on the host (VMware Workstation VMX hits 25-35% CPU on my quad core machine). The only fix is to power off/reset the guest, which brings the guest back up, but the same thing happens again a few minutes later.

Has anybody seen this before or got a fix? Apparently I have no support contract with VMware so can't file a ticket, but it's making the product unusable.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Fusion 7 is running VERY SLOW on the GM of Yosemite

Basically Fusion 7 is unusable on the GM of Yosemite because fusion 7 is so slow.

When I was still on Mavericks 10.9.5  Fusion 7 was working just great. What happened?

Is anyway that i can fix this? Or do I have to wait for an update?

к. не включается ssh.

Что посоветуете ?

Миграция VMware vCenter Server с Linux на Windows

$

vSphere 5 Essentials Plus Installation Guide

Hello Guys,

I am doing a trial of vSphere 5 Essentials Plus. But I am unsure where to start. I already have 3 servers running VMware ESXi 5.5 and managing them separately using vSphere client. I am using free edition. Now I see VMware offered really good prices model in Essentials and Essentials Plus. Please guide me (as I am unable to locate any kind of guide so far). Some specific questions are,

1. Do I need a separate server to make a controller (to install vCenter Server) or I can install it on any slave node?

2. Can I use one of the VM to install Windows and vCenter Client software on it? Then can I use use same node to deploy virtual machines (using available resources)?

3. What are the minimum requirements for lab setup?

4. Where I can get documentation for VCP?

Hassan

Can't access virtual machine after migrating to SSD

$

I recently swapped out my old Mac hard drive and moved everything to SSD. I made an EXACT clone (I thought) of my original drive and expected my virtual machine to be part of that.

However, when I try to access it, I can see the snapshot image of my suspended desktop, but when I try to access, I get this error:

Unable to open file "/Users/me/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/Windows 7 x64.vmwarevm/Virtual Disk.vmdk"

I can't find this file anywhere in my Virtual Machines folder and not sure where else to look for it. I have system files set as visible.

Of note, the size of my virtual machine file on my new drive is 6.74 GB, but the same file on my original drive is 21.45 GB, which is what I'd expect it to be.

If I plug my original drive in using a SATA/USB connector, I can access the drive and  VMWare instantly recognizes the virtual machine. I can boot it up past the windows intro screen, but it hangs on a black screen after that. Eventually, I get this error:

The operation on file "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/me/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/Windows 7 x64.vmwarevm/Virtual Disk-flat.vmdk" failed.

If the file resides on a remote file system, make sure that the network connection and the server where this disk resides are functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach the media.

Select Retry to attempt the operation again.

Select Cancel to end this session.

Select Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system.

I've tried all these things, but none have worked. I don't see a Virtual Disk.vmdk file in my folder on this other drive either. Again, not sure where to find it apparently.

Additionally, I've tried to transfer the machine image from my original hard drive to my new one, but it throws a bunch of errors about half way through and stops. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the error log and drive right now, so I can't include the exact message.

I'm using Fusion for Mac(Yosemite) Version 7.0.1 (2235595)

Any thoughts on how to get this up and running? Ideally, I need my original virtual machine on my new drive.

Thanks.

How do you backup your Mirage Environnment

$

Hello Techies,

I wonder how do you backup your Mirage Environment?

As seen here

https://communities.vmware.com/thread/457860

You have to backup SQL in the same time as storage

But i'm curious about wich solution do you use personnaly?

As I have read, for storage backup you have to use a backup software that can handle Ntfs ADS stream, wich one do you use?

For SQL backup, with wich solution do you get the DB dump?

To resume, how do you do? Does anyone have tried a distater recovery of the entire environment?

Any name of third used software is welcome

Thanks for help

Confirm Microsoft Server licensing in clusters

$

Hello, just wanted to confirm my understanding of how the Microsoft licensing works.

Just to keep things simple.  Lets say I have a Blade chassis with 8 Blades,so 8 Physical servers with 2 physical processors in each blade.

One Vcenter server that is virtual

About 50 Vm's

If I had one HA cluster with all 50 Vm's spread out throughout the 8 Blades then I would need 25 (Windows Licenses) * 8 (physical Servers) = 200 Windows Server Licenses or 8 Datacenter server licenses.  This I believe i have right.  You get two VM's per license thats why im cutting in half

But what if I split it it up into 2 HA Clusters?  Spreading out roughly 25 VM's between the two clusters with 4 Blades in each cluster.

Then the math would work out to be

13 (Windows Licenses) * 4 (physical Servers) = 52 Windows Server licenses per cluster, so 104 licenses total.

Big Difference if it works out that i can split the clusters like so.

Now if there was an actual Microsoft Audit, do they look at it and see 8 Physical servers and require the 200 licenses or do they look at it from a cluster standpoint?

Hopefully that made sense
