Could not found the recovery partition to install MacOS
Extremely bizzarre but worrying datastore error. Atomic test and set of disk block returned false for equality
Hi guys, this problem is driving me crazy and preventing me from putting this kit into production.
We have small clusters, x6 hosts in each, esxi 6.7u3, 3par 8200 storage array, vcenter 6.7u3 also. DL360 Gen10 servers with x4 intel x710 10Gbe ports, and 32Gb SD card in each.
Esxi is installed on the SD card, and the scratch location set to a shared iscsi datastore, with each host having its own folder. This appeared to work fine, until I reboot the whole cluster of 6 at the same time, where the datastore with the scratch folders randomly disappears, and the host loses its ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation setting which reverts back to default.
I have tried setting the Syslog.global.logDir setting, which I thought made an improvement, until more reboots later and the problem was still there.
When the host drops its scratch location, it hangs longer on boot, and also has this error message in the log:-
LVM: 15237: Failed to open device naa.60002ac0000000000000000200020cb8:1 : Atomic test and set of disk block returned false for equality
It seems whenever that error happens, the datastore is dropped, and the scratch setting is lost. Its utterly infuriating! Out of desperation I removed the elx isci driver/vib, no difference. I just dont know where to go from here, as pretty much whenever we reboot a whole cluster, some of the hosts will drop their scratch location and require manual intervention to fix. Not acceptable with only a 6 host cluster!
Any tips to try and fix this? It is driving me insane and making me feel useless that I cannot fix the problem. I should add it does not happen to all hosts at the same time, its more random. Of course once the setting has reverted with the error above, it needs manual intervention to fix. Also, as soon as the host is booted, I CAN access the datastore it had a problem with during boot, its not lost forever, which is even more bizzarre.
vCenter is down
I am unable to access my vCenter. I am able to telnet {telnet vcenter_fqdn 9443} and also there is sufficient space available on the partitions. vCenter service shows down and when tried to start getting below error

After update, opening OVAs did not pass OVF specification; opening existing VMs get internal error
I last used VMWare Workstation Pro 15.5 in March 2020 for one class. I had a number of VMs created from OVA and ISO files that worked fine before. When I first opened VMWare yesterday, I updated to the latest version (15.5.6 build-16341506). Windows has updated numerous times since I last ran VMWare. I have made some system settings changes since then to reduce Windows leaking information (unfortunately did not log them). Core isolation, credential guard, device guard are all disabled.
Per class instructions, I downloaded four OVA files from college's server. No hash values were provided but same problem with 4 different files over 3 attempts plus second issue so don't think it is corrupt files (it certainly still could be). When trying to install I received the error message shown in Capture2 saying the OVA file did not pass OVF specification performance. I clicked the "Retry" button and received the error message shown in Capture 3 that it could not create the destination directory. I deleted the four downloaded OVA files and repeated the process twice more. Same results each time.
I then tried to open some of my previous VM's. For each one, I received the message shown in Capture5 that the VM's could not be opened due to "internal error" and asking me if I wanted to remove them from the library. I did this for each one. I then ran VMWare-->File-->Scan for Virtual Machines to add them back in the library and tried again. Same results.
Neither can I create a new VM. When I try, I get the error message "file not found." This is shown in the Capture6 file.
This led me to believe it could be a corrupt update installation, even though VMWare appears to be running normally otherwise. I tried repairing the installation in Windows Control Panel-->Programs-->Uninstall and repeated all of the above processes with same results.
My only other thought was a file permission issue. My user (regular user, not admin) account has "full control" of my User folder, subfolders, and VM files. Not enough of a Windows Admin to know what else to check. When I log into my administrator account and run VM or if I run it from user account as admin, I get the same errors trying to open my old VMs (Capture7) and installing the OVA files (Capture8) as before. Of note was as administrator VMWare opened the VM startup screen (background in Capture7 & 8) where it did not as a regular user.
Any recommendations on how to solve this issue?
Thank you in advance for your time and expertise.

Tool for Capacity Planning
Hi
Our company is now planning to move to the VMWARE Virtualized Environment. I have read the articles about the VMWARE Capacity Planner but this is available only from partners.
Is there any third party tool also available which do the same job?

Issue with AMD hardware and nested Virtualisation
Hi Everyone,
Performing some home labs on my recently upgraded workstation PC. CPU is AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and discovered an issue which wasn't there on Intel based platform.
Setup I am having issues with is:
> Host PC: Windows 10 Pro (1909), VMware Workstation 15.5 Pro.
> Guest VM: Windows Server 2016 GUI with Hyper-V role installed.
>Issue: Unable to boot the VM created in Hyper-V just get black screen with single dot (cursor) no Hyper-V splash screen you usually get even before it reads from ISO
All CPU Virtualisation options selected. Tried both Hyper-V mode (unsupported) and Windows Server 2016 on VMware Guest Setup.
Suspected graphics issue initially, but tested on both my original graphics card AMD RX 580 and an NVidia GTX 1050 Ti.
Tested the same setup on my laptop i5 6th Gen VMWare Workstation Pro 15.5 and it works perfectly,
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.
Creating New VM Defaults to NVMe for Hard Disk Type
Not sure when this was implemented in Workstation, but creating a new vm, now defaults to "NVMe" for Hard Disk type from "SCSI". Curious if this was implemented with v15.5.6-16341506. Been some time since creating a new vm as I have several vm's that I normally clean install windows when needed to an existing vm.
Is this the new default?

Host-Profile complains with DHCP
Vmware Workstation 15.5.6 Virtual Machines behaving erratically when Hyper-V is enabled
Vmware Workstation 15.5.6 Virtual Machines behaving erratically when Hyper-V is enabled.
Windows 10 Pro, WIndows 2016 and Windows 2019 all have the same issues where screen flashes after trying to login and then these VM's log out.
Even tried a fresh install but no change to this behavior.
According to VMware when Vmware Workstation 15.5.5 (or later) is installed on WIndows 10 Version 2004 or later, Hyper-V can be enabled due redesign of
Vmware Workstaiton where it no longer uses privileged mode.
VM's can start but behave erratically
Then when Hyper-V is turned off, all Vmware Workstation VM's work normally.
Please advise on why this is happening?
Thank you so much..
Downgrade VMware Build # to a lower build # ( ESXi 6.7)
Hi,
I have upgraded to a higher build # than intended to. I am trying to use this command in conjunction with the --allow-downgrades parameter to make it work, but nothing I try works.
Each time I try it I get various errors. Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong? Keep in mind, I'm trying to downgrade to: (Somehow I ended up at build # 16316930)
VMware ESXi 6.7, Patch Release ESXi670-201912001
For example, I found this on a blog:
Put host in Maintenance Mode
1. Run this Command
# esxcli network firewall ruleset set -e true -r httpClient
2. Run this Command (I've tried so many variations - but I keep getting errors)
#esxcli software profile update -d https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml -p ESXi-6.7.0-20191201001-standard --allow-downgrades
3.Reboot
4. Reconfigure the Firewall:
# esxcli network firewall ruleset set -e false -r httpClient
This is based on VMware ESXi 6.7, Patch Release ESXi670-201912001
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.7/rn/esxi670-201912001.html
I really don't want to re-install the OS. If anyone can help me, I'd be grateful.
Thank you in advance! If you know a different or alternative way to achieve this, please do share.

Trying to join a ESXi host to AD domain getting Failed - Errors in Active Directory operations
Join Domain
Key
haTask-ha-host-vim.host.ActiveDirectoryAuthentication.joinDomain-1645591
Description
Enables ActiveDirectory authentication on the host
State
Failed - Errors in Active Directory operations.
ESXi host and DC are in separate vlans
The following ports are allowed from ESXi to DC, not seeing any denied packets in the firewall logs when I attempt to join
ESXi firewall has both TCP and UDP allowed for DNS
- TCP 88 (Kerberos Key Distribution Center)
- TCP 135 (Remote Procedure Call)
- TCP 139 (NetBIOS Session Service)
- TCP 389 (LDAP)
- TCP 445 (SMB,Net Logon)
- UDP 53 (DNS)
- UDP 389 (LDAP, DC Locator, Net Logon)
- TCP 49152-65535 (Randomly allocated high TCP ports)
DNS records (forward and reverse) are created for the hosts in DNS
What would be the next step in troubleshooting AD joining?
Added
- Port 464 – Kerberos – change/password changes
- Port 3268- Global Catalog search
- Port 123 – NTP
- Port 137 – NetBIOS Name Service
AD Schema is at 2012R2

Freebsd 11.1 P1 OS packet drops with vsphere 6.7 update 1
Hi All,
I have few freebsd 11.1 p1 vms which is running on vSphere 6.7 update 1.
We started facing high packet drops when we ping other vms in the same subnet(40 rto out of 1000 pings)
It's running with vmxnet3 adapter without any VMware tools from beginning. Hardware version is still having v10.
We started facing this issues after vm migration to different cluster where the underlying storage is same.
Please note, all these freebsd vms were migrated to this vSphere 6.7 environment recently from vSphere 5.5 where we have not faced any issues.
From beginning, we have not installed any vmtools on freebsd vms.
To reproduce this issue, we have built a new free bsd vm with 11.1 version where we have not noticed any single packet drops. All looks fine here.
Next plans;-
Vm tools can be installed. It may fix the issue.
Else we can downgrade the vmxnet3 to e1000 to see the behavior.
Any other idea to resolve this issue?
Thanks

If you rip CD through Fusion, is the CD ripped to a small storage space within Fusion or to the main drive in Mac?
Is there a way to direct the CD to either Mac, or adjust the storage within Fusion to be about 2GB, so that I could remove the file after each CD?
Esxi 6.7 VM packet drops on standard vSwitch with Route based on IP Hash
Hello,
I am running VMware ESXi, 6.7.0, 10764712 - upgraded and clean installations, tried different HW (Cisco UCS C220 M3 and SuperMicro servers with Cisco or Intel NICs 10GbE).
I found that there is a packet loss (in percents) in some VMs when both uplinks are connected. If one or another uplink is disconnected, packet loss dissappear.
In testing env is only one guest - Centos 5 with latest VM Tools, vNIC VMXNET3 (tried E1000, not better) - copy of the most affected VM.
This looks like similar problem - Route based on IP hash for Windows Server, but without response.
Or this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/vmware/comments/93fbuw/massive_vsan_latency_increase_on_upgrade_to_67/
There was no problem before update to 6.7.

Unable to set the physicalNIC speed config value to auto-negotiate
I'm hoping someone could tell what's wrong in this expression. I have less/no experience in scripting. I ran this script from vmware powercli and I connected to vcenter.
This is to set the configured speed(mentioned in the screen shot) of a physical nic of an ESX host to auto negotiate, which is currently set to 10000 MB.
physical nic : vmnic0
configured speed to be set: auto negotiate
VMhost name value is changed to xyz here.
I have 80 more hosts for which the vmnic values are to be set to autonegotiate as per the recommended settings. 4 nics are present for each ESX host. Totally I have to modify 320 times in order to perform this manually and get this fixed. Can someone help me with a script

Scale factor of screen - VBox features it, VMware is better, is it possible too?
Hi!
Again I was confrontated with VirtualBox at friend's computer and saw there else one wanted option which don't know to do in VMware.
It is screen scaling factor from 100% up to 200%.
It is useful for screens with small resolution - example 640x480 screen is visible as 1280x960...and it's better!
Is this feature in VMware?
Thank you for help.

Dedicated ESXi host and private switch for via?
We are preparing to implement our first VCF solution and VMware have suggested the best approach would be to run the via VM on an ESXi management host rather than use a laptop for stand up.
Looking at the VCF documentation the requirements for this type of deployment seem very specific in terms of having an ESXi host configured with a vmk0 address of 10.1.0.200 and also a private physical switch connected from this ESXi host to the management switch for VCF.
My question is could an existing ESXi host be used to run the VIA VM rather than a dedicated one to avoid this overhead? If so, is there a way to change the need for this specific IP address requirement on vmk0?
The other point I’m looking for clarification on is the need for the dedicated private switch. If i choose to deploy the solution using a laptop i connect directly to my management switch and run the deployment but when i use an ESXi host to run via it adds this additional physical switch to the solution.
Please can someone help me understand the above.
many thanks
