ESXi Admin and Microsoft Edge Browser - form fields not set correctly

System Information

Microsoft Edge 41.16299.15.0

Microsoft EdgeHTML 16.16299

Windows 10 Pro

Version 1709

OS Build 16299.192

ESXi 6.5.0 Update 1 (Build 7526125)

This is more of a bug report.  The work around is to use another web browser.

I was creating a new VM and step 4 Customize settings appeared with the data fields blank and an error message triggered by the validation rules.  This has not been the only time I have had this happen to me with Edge.  Using Chrome I do not have the same problem.

Attached is a screen shot of what I saw.  I did not change any settings.  This is how the form looked when I navigated from step 3 Select storage.

The Edge developer tools do not report any JavaScript errors.

With VSphere 6.5, delta.vmdk files as shown in previous versions are gone, How do I pull out such files now?

There used to be delta vmdk files with suffix of "*delta.vmdk", and also with icon as shown below:

However, with 6.5 version, though the icon for the file is still the same, the suffix "delta.vmdk" is gone, with only *.vmdk" instead.

I have a script: IF (!$strFilename.Contains("delta.vmdk")), now it cannot pull out such deltas any more.

1.   How can I pull out these deltas now?

2.  What attribute can I use to display the size of such files?

Thanks for your help in advance!

What do you expect from an answer to your question(s) ? Should it be code that a beginner understands or code that provides the fastest solution in a large vSphere environment ?

Nested ESXi's guests network fail to work past the nested ESXi host.

I understand nested ESXi instances may not be supported.  I would like to report that something has changed recently with the ESXi 6.0 and ESXi 6.5 that breaks network communications for nested ESXi guests.

The setup is the following.

An ESXi host has a guest with ESXi 6.5 installed.  In the nested ESXi instance a guest is created.  The nested guest cannot connect to hosts beyond the nested host though the network.  This setup worked as of Monday last week.  The changes are each ESXi Host has likely had the latest patches applied.  Upon rebooting the nested ESXi's guests network connections failed to work.

Hardware -> ESXi Host -> (guest) nested ESXi -> (nested guest)

The symptoms of the network connections are as follows.  A nested guest is unable to obtain an IP though DHCP.  If the nested guest is assigned a static IP it is able to ping the nested ESXi host.  The nested guest cannot ping the gateway address, DNS servers or other hosts on the same network subnet that are not nested guests.  The nested guest does not get ARP data for the network subnet.

I first encountered this issue when I patched two nested ESXi 6.5 to build 7526125.  Both of these instances had existing guests and the networking was working correctly before the patch.  The patch required the nested ESXi host to reboot.  Upon reboot the nested ESXi guests network connections failed to work.  All settings appeared correct.  The physical hardware hypervisor in this situation is ESXi 6.0.  I do not know what patches it has.

To see if the issue is repeatable I tested the following.

In each of the tests the nested guests were tested with PFSense, Windows 10, and Ubuntu Desktop.

1.  Create a new install of a nested ESXi 6.6 on the ESXi 6.0 host.  Apply patches but not apply the 7526125 patch.

Hardware -> ESXi 6.0 Host -> (guest) nested ESXi 6.5 -> nested guest

Upon each patch I would test and if it failed I would recreate the nested ESXi instance and upgrade the patch before the last and test.  In all tests the nested guest failed to obtain a network connection.

Something with the ESXi 6.0 host could be causing the problem.

2.  My home ESXi servers were already patched to 7526125.  I attempted the same tests created a nested ESXi 6.5 with different guests.  Each time I had the same result.  The nested guest DHCP would not work and the static IP would only ping the nested host but no other computer on the subnet.

3. I created an ESXi 6.5 guest in VMWare Fusion 8.x.  I patched it to 7526125 and a nested guest was able to communicate with the network.  The ESXi 6.5 guest network was setup as a proxy sharing the host's network connection.

This is more of a bug report.  I don't know if there are any redacted patches for 6.0 but it looks like 6.5 7526125 might have been redacted.

As of now my nested ESXi setup is dead.  I can't figure out how to recover the network connectivity.  I think if the ESXi 6.0 or 6.5 host is patched to a build it does not matter what version the nested ESXi guest is running.  A nested guest's network connections will not work correctly.

is ESXi 6.5.0 update 1 build 7526125 a bad release?

I have my ESXi hypervisors upgraded to 6.5.0 update 1 build 7526125 and it seems this has been redacted?

Is this a bad patch?

Remote access to VMWare Workstation in html5 webbrowser with WSX server still supported, or any other new solution ?

I see this pretty old blog about this:

Share your VMs in VMware Workstation - Support Insider - VMware Blogs

What I can see, is the last release of the WSX server is outdated back from 2012. Does anyone know, if it is discontinued, or are there any other web browser based remote management solution exist for VMWare Workstation (not Sphere, as I know it is the default client now)

Thanks for any info in advanced !

Best way to access and manage shared VM's in Workstation 14

The way I am currently accessing and managing the VM's on my main computer (Windows 10 host, Workstation 14.0) from my notebook, is to put the VM's under "Shared VM's", have Workstation installed on my notebook and connect using the IP of my main computer.

However, I think this means that I need to buy two licenses, of which one is just for remote access. I tried accessing the VM's using VMWare Player, but this gives an error saying it can't connect to the vSphere server.

Is the way I am currently doing it the only way, or are there other/better ways to access and manage VM's on a remote computer? I also have Remote Desktop access to the computer, but just using the application in stead of switching to the RD session is much easier.

Connecting to the internet with VMware

I have VMware workstation 12 pro installed on a Ubuntu 16.04 host system. The virtual machine that I have installed is windows 10 64bit. The VMware and the windows 10 were installed for me by a collegue. Firefox is also installed on windows 10 but I can not get it to connect to the internet. I have been trying to apply the methods discussed in this tutorial:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqf25TUr7_A

It is not the version of VMware that I have but it is similar. I also have connected the PC to the router with a cabel but that also was not successful.

What I have done is to go to the Virtual Network Editor, clicked on NAT (Share hosts IP address with VMs) and then save.

When I restart the machine I still can not connect to the internet through the VM.

How may I solve this problem?

Thank You,

Mike

vRA XaaS Resource Action issue - can't select values for an external action input - options greyed out

$

Hi,
Trying to configure a Resource Action in vRA for a day 2 operation on an item (more specifically changing the storage policy of a VM disk). The Resource action maps to a vRO workflow.
This action has two inputs. When it comes to defining the values of one of those inputs called vCenterVM, the vcVM field in "Define Field Values" is greyed out....no way to select it. While the selection works fine for the other input (IAAServer).

------------------------
Here are the details:
- name of the Resource Action: "Hassan-Change Storage Policy for Storage Migration"
- this resource action applies to VMs. It maps to a vRO workflow called "Change Storage Policy for storage migration".
- this workflow has 5 input parameters:

     storage policyName   // string
     option                        // string
     diskNum                   // number
     iaasHost                  // vCAC:VCACHost
     vcVM                      // VC:VirtualMachine

- The first three input parameters (policyName, option and diskNum) will be entered by the user in the XaaS form exposed to him. These will determine which VM disks will be migrated and where (to which storage policy they should be migrated based on policy name).

- To select the policyName, we will add a drop-down that will map to a vRO action that retrieves the storage policies names from the vCenter SPBM API.

This vRO action requires two inputs to run: vCenterVM and IAASServer. Those should be mapped to the last two workflow inputs (iaasHost and vcVM).

And here's my problem:

when I select IAAServer, I am able to select IaaS Server in the Define Field Values. See below:

However, when I select vCenterVM, I am not able to select the vcVM field. It is greyed out. Please see below:

Can anyone please advise why the field vcVM above is greyed out when trying to set a value for vCenterVM. Both parameters are of type VC:VirtualMachine.

Thanks.

Updating from Esxi 6.0 to 6.5

Hey Guys,

I have a question. My VMware ESXi host is on version 6.0 build 3825889 which is from 05/12/2016.

1) If I update to VMware ESXi 6.5 to latest build which is 7388607. Will I get all previous patches and updates on it and will it work without crashing the server?

2) If that’s not the case if I install each build one by one in a sequence without rebooting the server will it work or will I have to reboot each time when I install each build update?

Please suggest the correct way to update without corrupting my server or VM’s based on the build I have right now (6.0 build 3825889).

The display protocol for this desktop is currently not available!

Dear,

I'm currently using an VMware View v4.5 infrastructure which now out of the blue keeps on giving me a hard time in sense of connecting to several Windows XP and 7 based VM's. The 'Thin Client' and 'VMware View client' keeps on giving me the error message 'the display protocol for this desktop is currently not available' once I try to choose one of the proposed available VM's using PCoIP.

I really hope that somebody can help me out with this one 'cause I'm currently performing a small POC with 30 clients.....

Additionally I already tried this thread 'http://communities.vmware.com/thread/259692', but got an negative result....

Thanks for the help...

Trafiic from VM's in the same VLAN should be via core switch

Hi,

I have one request from our customer and thought I will discuss here.

As per their new policy, even the VM's in the same VLAN should not communicate within the vSwitch rather all communication should hit the core switch and return to intended VM.

I would appreciate if someone shed some light on this as to whether this is a valid request and can be achievable. If yes, what tools involved to achieve this.

Thanks in advance.

NSX Manager - User Account

I am planning to use Power NSX to automate few of my NSX DFW policies.

At present I have the admin account with NSX Manager.

Is there any way I can create separate account for NSX Manager with less privileage  than Admin account which allows only to execute policies related to DFW,

I  am using NSX 6.3.2

When checked what i observed is that in NSX Manager it is possible to create account which has access to web interface.

Let me know any one has any inputs regarding this.

Which version of ESXi are compatible with VMware Unified Access Gateway?

$

Dear VMware EUC community,

I would like to check compatibility of VMware Unified Access Gateway(UAG) with hypervisor software.

I've checked that UAG is compatible with Hyper-V(2012 R2/2016).

But I could not find which version of ESXi are compatible with UAG.

I have checked below page and found that UAG can be used on VMware ESX host(not an ESXi).

It seems to be that I can deploy UAG on my ESX host even if I'm using ESX 4.x...

https://docs.vmware.com/en/Unified-Access-Gateway/3.2/com.vmware.uag-32-deploy-config.doc/GUID-F1C1700C-EB06-4F59-8CE6-F155C9AD8555.html

But I could not find any compatibility results on VMware product In Interoperability Matrices.

VMware Product Interoperability Matrices

Does anyone know which version of ESX/ESXi host can support UAG?

If there are some information, can you please tell me?

Any contribution on this thread would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Yammy
