Hot-Plug (add) CPU failing with invalid memory reservation, even though it's properly set
I have VM with Hot CPU Add enabled, ESXi6.0. When attempting to increase the # of sockets I'm getting the following error:
Failed to power on VM.
Could not power on virtual machine: msg.vmk.status.VMK_BAD_PARAM.
Group vmm.3349833: Failed to apply memory configuration for VMM group vmm0:tyler-ip1-121. (min: 0, max: -1, minLimit: -1, shares: -3, units: pages)
Invalid memory reservation for a fully preallocated virtual machine: the minimum must be equal to memsize (29884416 pages).
The VM failed to resume on the destination during early power on.
Hot-add of cpu failed.
The hot-plug operation failed.
The VM in question has the full memory reserved (locked). It also has a passthrough device, which requires full memory reservation anyways. I have confirmed there's plenty of memory available for several fully provisioned/reserved memory images of this VM.
I see the above "Failed to apply memory configuration for VMM group vmm0:tyler-ip1-121. (min: 0, max: -1, minLimit: -1, shares: -3, units: pages)". This is curious, as it certainly seems as if the logic for creating the shadow VM for hot-plug isn't taking into account the original VM's memory reservation settings at all!
For comparison, here are the two vmkernel log messages for the memory/cpu:
Normal startup:
2016-11-16T22:01:04.106Z cpu54:3293773)Sched: vm 3293775: 6499: Adding world 'vmm0:tyler-ip1-121', group 'host/user', cpu: shares=-4 min=13794 minLimit=-1 max=-1, mem: shares=-3 min=29884416 minLimit=-1 max=-1
Shadow VM startup:

Seems like a bug, agree?
Thanks.
how to identify unused VDI workstations
I notice that a number of my VDI workstations are showing up as "Available", so they have no action sessions on them.
How can I identify those workstations that are not being used (or being rarely used)?
For example, is there a way to get a listing of all VDI workstations that have not been logged into in 90 days? I could then contact those users and possibly reclaim and redeploy those resources.
Sharing a .vmdk file between two guests
Good Afternoon,
Is it possible to take an existing .vmdk file and attach it to a second guest.
We have Linux VM that has its .vmdk file. Call this LVM1. They are building a second Linux VM, we will call this LVM2.
LVM1 has its .vmdk file added. They would like to use the same .vmdk file that is presented to LVM1 and add it to LVM2.
The object being that they can create a share on LVM2 and move the data from the .vmdk file. Once completed, remove the .vmdk file from LVM2 and power LVM1 back up.
Power off LVM1 while all this is going on.
I have seen the process of adding the hard disk and using an existing Virtual disk.
Questions:
1. Is this possible?
2. What are the potential issues or is there a possibility of data corruption?
Also, we have two VCenters in two different data centers. There will be third Linux VM (LVM3), but this one is a different VCenter in complete different data center.
Same thing, they want to use the .vmdk file from LVM1 and attach it to LVM3.
Next Question: How do I move\copy the .vmdk file between Data centers and what are the risk?
Can I browse the datastore and download the files to location on my network and then upload them to the datastore in the other data center.
Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.
Thank You
Brian Dougherty

Application pool - Windows explorer (file manager)
Is it possible to use explorer.exe as file explorer via remote app ?
We are using Horizon 7 and explorer.exe is not listed under avaliable apps when you are creating app pool. If you add it manually nothing happens when you try to access it. It is abit of an tricky application since this is also a shell for windows systems but I wonder if it is possible ?

vSphere Web Client unable to connect to VDP
vCenter: 5.5.0 Update 3e (Build 4180647) on Windows Server 2012 R2
ESXi: 5.5.0 Patch 9 (4345813)
VDP: 5.8.1.7, 5.8.3.13, 5.8.4.6
I have been experiencing problems with VDP after upgrading two vCenter Server’s to 5.5 Update 3e (on Windows). There are three VDP appliances for each environment. After the vCenter upgrade, one VDP appliance from each environment, running version 5.8.3.13, fails all backups. The two other appliances in each environment, on version 5.8.1.7, have continued to backup successfully.
I decided to replace one VDP appliance that was failing with version 5.8.4.6. I ran into the same problems as reported in https://communities.vmware.com/thread/542344. After applying the workaround, the VDP was able to configure successfully. I also went ahead and applied the VDPHotfix_SHA2.sh hotfix to all other VDP appliances (https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2111900). After doing that, I ran into yet another problem – the vSphere Web Client just hangs when connecting to the VDP appliances. All that appears is an hourglass icon and it stays there forever.
I have tried the following:
- Re-register the VDP appliance with vCenter
- Install .war/.xml files from VDP appliance into vCenter (https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2089962)
- Rename SerenityDB folder (https://pickettsproblems.wordpress.com/2015/03/17/vmware-vdp-6-0-connecting-stuck/)
Has anyone experienced this? How can I get the Web Client to connect to any of the appliances again?
HP MicroServer Gen8 (G1610T) and passthrough support
Hi all
After searching for hours and days, I did not find an answer to this question:
I have a HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 G1610T (Celeron), running a free ESXi with HP Custom Image for VMware ESXi 6.0 U2.
In the BIOS, VT-d is enabled.
Under Configuration->Advanced Settings I see the message 'Host does not support passthrough configuration'.
I would like to attach an external USB3-Disk to my Microserver and mount it to a specific Ubuntu-Server-VM to backup some data.
Is there any solution to do this or is this a limitation of the hardware I have?
Best regards, Raoul
VMware and Exchange 2010 Backup Strategies.
Just reaching out to see how other admins secure on-premise Exchange data. Currently, I have:
One colo data center with 3 office locations.
2 Exchange 2010 servers Win 2008R2 VM (vSphere 5.5) . Both are CAS and database servers.
Both servers are on the same storage array VNX 5300.
I do weekly DB backups to disk on a dedicated backup SAN (older eqallogic).
Backup are duplicated to AWS VTL.
We are currently looking at vCloud Air or the new VMware AWS partnership.
I would like to hear how other Admins handle Exchange backups. Specifically, do you clone your exchange servers as part of your backup routine? I have in the past, but as they grow in size this is not feasible anymore.
Thanks in advance.
How to customize a Hypervisor iso with PowerCLI instead of using Esxi Trial ISO from the repo
I've successfully customized, following the istruction here
http://www.v-front.de/p/esxi-customizer-ps.html#download
the esxi iso.
The problem is that I'd like to customize the Free version that I've already have with a valid "free license".it
What was the right procedure, if that is possible!
P.s. would like wonderful if that procedure would works with 6.5 version, too.
Thank you
Vmware disconnected and reconnects frequently
Title says it all, VMware workstation 12.5 keeps disconnecting and then reconnecting frequently. I am running Linux Mint 18 MATE edition as my host and the same OS on my virtual machine. I have everything updated, can't figure out what the problem is. I really need help because it interrupts some of my projects that I am doing on the virtual machine. Does anyone have a solution?
OneDrive for Business and Floating Pools
I am trying to figure out how I can use OneDrive for Business in a Floating Pool that refreshes after log off. We don't want files to sync to the drive due to space restrictions and refreshing of the machine.
We have a link to the user's OneDrive in the cloud and want associates to use that or save to a folder that is redirected. My problem with that is that the user has to keep logging into OneDrive for the link to work. They also have to make sure they save it to that folder.
We have two folders that are redirected, but we want users to be in the habit of saving to OneDrive.
We are using UEM and App Volumes. We are also using the Writeable disk but not the one that retains personal settings.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
vRealize and HP Server Automation
Anyone using the vRa 7.x integration with HP Server automation?
I am looking to create blueprints that can attach hp sa software polices as part of the provisioning process.
I was interested in any feedback.
Thanks in advance

Late 2016 MBP 15" scaling and resolution in 8.5.2
Just transitioned onto the new MBP and while all my VMs seem to work as expected, there are scaling issues with pretty much all of them. VMWare seems top think that the native resolution is 3840x2400 rather than the 2880x1800 that it actually is. If I turn off use full resolution it scales everything to 1920x1200. If it was just a matter of setting it once to some static resolution I wouldn't care but it reverts to what it thinks is right every time I swap between full screen apps. Anyone have a good solution for this?
Thanks,
Sandow
Taskbar Pinned Recent Documents List
Hi All,
I am using Horizon View 7 with AppVolumes and UEM 9.0. The pools are instant clones. I am able to pin Microsoft Word to the taskbar and have it persist on logoff/logon. When a user opens multiple Word or Excel files it will save the recent list of documents. You can view this by right clicking on the pinned Word or Excel icon. However, if you log off, this list is missing.
I have tried to save the following items but they do not work. I added the wildcard since that setting is user specific. Not even sure if that setting works as a wildcard in this scenario.
[IncludeRegistryTrees]
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\User MRU\AD*\File MRU
[IncludeFolderTrees]
<AppData>\Roaming\Microsoft\Office\Recent
<AppData>\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent
Does anyone have any ideas on how to have the recent list of documents persist? I believe it is called a jump list.

Buongiorno,
in un ambiente vSphere essential plus con tre server e uno storage dedicato con 8 dischi, consigliereste di usare tutto lo spazio per un solo datastore per tutte le vm o meglio avere più di un pool raid e più di un datastore?
