(UPDATED) Workstation and VMPlayer 12.1.0 build-3272444 extended vesa configuration DEPRECATED behaviour at boot time (hardware 12 related?)

$

This was a BIG PROBLEM for me for few hours, so it could be for others. This post maybe will eventually try to help other users with the same problem and to advise developers to change this - in my opinion - absolutely deprecable behaviour.

As in the subject, the problem is exactly that,

Advanced considerations.

I like to use extended vesa resolutions with all my guests to properly and quickly configure my guest machines screen resolution at boot time.

With Linux hosts I do use Grub configuration file to setup glxmode to my choosed resolution (usually I like to boot my guests at 1440x900) and I do use glxpayload grub option to keep it from console to the graphical user interface.

Everything was working as expected until I upgraded my guests virtual hardware to the last versiion (12) and I upgraded to latest guest VMware Tools (version 10.0.5-3228253).

To cut it short, after both this tasks (hardware upgrade and new VMware Tools upgrade), ALL my guests keep to ignore the Grub glxmode resolution and they started in VGA mode, keeping it for the whole boot and ending me with a graphical machine configured at VGA resolution :-( Really disappointing. Grub prompt showed me - using the vbeinfo command - the extended vesa bios modes were no more supported.

I could use xorg.conf.d to properly setup the X resolution (in case of Linux guests), or do use drag and drop to resize the guests screen when OS and VMware Tools were properly loaded after boot was complited, then I still had always VGA (or any "non extended" Vesa Bios modes) at boot time in console mode.

What I did to solve the problem.

I then investigated the issue and find the culprit. ALL my virtual guest machines configuration (VMX files) were modified by something (Virtual Hardware 12? New VMware Tools?) with this three strings totally NOT WANTED AND NOT REQUESTED by me:

vmotion.checkpointFBSize = "4194304"

vmotion.checkpointSVGAPrimarySize = "33554432"

svga.guestBackedPrimaryAware = "TRUE"

I don't have idea what those lines properly do, then I finally found - and it was a relief - that simply changing:

svga.guestBackedPrimaryAware = "TRUE"

to

svga.guestBackedPrimaryAware = "FALSE"

solved the problem and my guests again like before respected the glxmode configured in the Grub configuration file and were able to boot any not standard Vesa Bios mode. This was also, obviously, confirmed by the vbeinfo command at Grub prompt.

Now I ask: why developer (or who considering it was not me???) changing the behaviour of such a delicate parameter without any explication?

IMHO, if this is inteded, VMware developers should come back to the old behaviour where svga.guestBackedPrimaryAware (do existed before? I don't reallyknow) it is by default FALSE!

If it is a bug, please, fix it :-(((

UPDATE: it is even worst compared to Iwas supposed it was :-(((( On some machines, I still didn't discover on what base, it is even worst! After shutdown the paramenter

svga.guestBackedPrimaryAware = "FALSE"

it is automagically (!!!) changed back to:

svga.guestBackedPrimaryAware = "TRUE"  :-(((

Now the problem is: how to block this change??? Yes I can still change the VMX file to read only, then I suppose there is another parameter controlling this VM guest configuration autochange! If you have any idea...

Dear Fellows,

Does anybody know when the VCAP's-NV will be available or betas?

What is going to be the process to get those? if for instance I don't have any VCP-NV and then I take the VCAP-NV (desing) will get the VCP-NV as well? any explanation will be very appreciated.

thanks in advance!!!

Hello,

I am trying to explore cloudClient 3.4.1 but while i try to execute a command 'vra catalog list' or other similar commands i get error "Error: User has insufficient privileges to make this API call."

I am not sure what are the permissions of configuration required before i can make the API call because the account which i am using to make these calls already have local Admin privilege on IAAS box & is IAAS Admin/Tenant admin. in short, the user is complete administrator of the tool.

Please help me as i found there is very limited documentation for cloudclient usability.

Thanks,

I would like to know how to reset the Agent VM Settings for an ESXi 6 U2 host?

I can't find documentation anywhere.

Please help.

ESXi 6 keeps randomly freezing

I'm currently in the process of setting up 2 ESXi hosts. I have one up and running with several VM's running on iscsi datastores.

Randomly since setup the host becomes unresponsive. I can't ping the host nor any of the VM's.

The host is accessible via BMC, but only enough to log in. After I login it doesn't do anything and I'm forced to reboot the server.

I attached the vmkernel log file in the hopes someone can see something I can't.

Agent not connecting to AppVolumes3

I have gone through the server/client setup procedure and created a test AppStack and Assignment.

Everything seems to have been done right but...

On the Client VM at startup I get a popup error: Connection Error (Manager https):

Unable to contact App Volumes Manager.

In the svservice log, I get:

How do I get the server name in the agent or why is it not showing up?

Platform Service controll 6 (PSC) pounding DNS for _kerberos-master.

I've got 2 load balanced PSCs hitting up my DNS servers ~8K times an hour for:

_kerberos-master._udp.mydomain

_kerberos-master._tcp.mydomain

_kerberos-master._udp.vsphere.local

Of course since none of these are default windows objects, they all come back unresolved.

Would be nice to get them to knock it off.

Syslog Forwarding

When I forward a syslog packet from log insight to a third party tool, what exactly changes?

IP header (source ip, destination IP)

Syslog packet

How exactly do these three things change when Log insight forwards a syslog packet to a new destination?

Thanks!

Best Practice for creating a Windows 2012 R2 file server VM with a C: (OS) and D: (DATA) partition?

$

I am in process of deploying a Windows 2012 R2 Standard server, as a primary file server for our environment.  I have create an 80GB VM, which is acting as the C: drive, and is solely for the OS and logs.

My questions is, for the D: partition/volume (used only for data sharing/collection) does it make more sense from an administrative standpoint to create this as another virtual machine and then mount that as the D: drive, or is it just simpler to create a LUN from my storage array and mount it to the virtual machine using iSCSI?  I'm using a Nimble Storage array for all VMs and iSCSI LUNs.

The initial size of the D: volume will be 1.5TB, and I want the flexibility to be able to dynamically grow it, when it starts reaching capacity.

I've been trying for the life of me to get a new vro appliance to register with my vcenter/sso domain. I have an external PSC and am trying to do vSphere mode. I've tried both pointing it at my psc which i believe is the correct option and vcenter itself. When i click connect, I immediately get a error returned of HTTP Status 400. You can see the full error in the attached screen shot. Anyone have any thoughts?

Renaming a host in an HA Cluster - SAN repercussions?

$

0

Hello,

I'm hoping for some advice please. We need to rename an ESXi host that's part of a HA cluster connected to a SAN - we use standard vSwitches only. I've read through VMware documentation regarding the process, but I want to be sure that there will be no repercussions with corruption to storage. The process as I understand it involves taking the host out of the cluster - obviously this would mean no running VMs - and then removing from vCenter, but does this eliminate all write operations to the SAN and any chance of corruption? Does putting the host into maintenance mode prevent any such risk?

Obviously we could just disable the connection to the SAN, but I would like to understand our options and their consequences.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

How to get SSL Certificates installed on VMware vCenter Appliance 6.0

$

Hiya,

I haveen strugling with getting SSL certificates installed for a couple of days now, it always seem to fail on the vpxd_servicecfg command.

I have followed tuts like : https://myvirtualife.net/2014/04/01/how-to-replace-default-vcsa-5-5-certificates-with-microsoft-ca-signed-certificates/

There are more out there, but they are all simular to each other. I follow it to the letter, but all i get is:

vcenter:/ssl/vCenterSSO # /usr/sbin/vpxd_servicecfg certificate change chain.pem rui.key

VC_CFG_RESULT=650

The only thing i can emagine is that there is a difference in vcenter 5.5 and 6.0, but other then that i wouldnt know how to fix this.

Can anyone help?

Regards.

2 Question regarding Fusion 8

Hello, I am currently using a trail edition of Fusion 8 to run Windows7 on MacBook Pro (running OS X El Capitan) and I have two questions.

1.  I have read Fusion 8 Pro will automatically suspend a VM when this lid of the MacBook is closed is it possible to make Fusion 8 do the same thing?

2.  As noted the Guest OS is Windows7.  The VM was created from a Lenovo ThinkPad using the VMware Converter Tool.  I have checked this option within Fusion 8 to "Pass Power to Guest" but after shutting down Windows and Exiting Fusion, then restarting Fusion and Windows the power information is still not passing to Windows.  I am wondering if this is due to the "Power Manager 3" software from IBM and if there is a way resolve this issue.
