VDS 6.0 - Determine output NIC from LACP Hash/Algorithm

$

We are currently building a vSphere architecture based for networking side on VDS and LACP aggregates under vSphere 6.0.

We are seeking a command/tips/whatever to determine the output NIC name choosed by a selected LACP algorithm (for outbound traffic of course, since the inbound link is selected by the switchs).

Example: for Source and destination IP address, TCP/UDP port and VLAN load balancing mode with the correct input (source IP / dest IP / Port / VLAN) and LACP ID the command will return which NIC from the LACP aggregate is used for routing the flow.

I think this might be usefull for debugging purposes...

Anyone know if such thing exists ?

Is retina display scaling configurable?

$

Does anyone know if you can configure the scaling that Fusion 7.x applies to a Windows guest OS when using a retina display?  The knowledge base article on retina displays says "By default, VMware Fusion scales (pixel-doubles) a Windows virtual machine to ensure maximum compatibility."  I know that I can instead enable full retina resolution, but my guest OS is a very old XP installation and enabling full res results in unreadably small text.  The double scale, however, results in less useable screen real estate than my old MacBook Pro 17" gave me.  What I am looking for is whether I can control the scale to instead of 2x maybe set it at like 1.5x or something like that so that I end up with something in between full retina resolution and pixel-doubling which would give me a bigger "virtual" resolution but still be readable (Windows XP currently thinks my resolution is something like 1400x900 whereas something on the order of 1900x1200 would be perfection).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

WS Tech Preview won't install on Windows Server 2016 TP2

1)  Install Windows Server 2016 (with Business Essentials Feature enabled).

2)  Install WS TP.  Installation went OK with no problems reported

3)  Rebooted - OS went into Recovery Mode complaining that thec:/Windows/windows342/drivers vmci.sys was not digitally signed and verified

  4)  Went to command and deleted vmci.sys

5)   Got to the recovery console again.  OS complains that c:/windows/system32/drivers/vsock.sys is not digitally signed and verfied.

6)  Reboot to command line troubleshooting deleted vsock.sys

  7)  Finally Server booted normally and I used add/remove programs to remove WS Tech Preview.

Does anybody know if I will have the same problem with WS 11.x?

Of course Windows Server 2016 is not officially supported but maybe it will be GA close to the time of Workstation 12 GA.

Needless to say Virtualbox 5 works flawlessly.

vRA 503 Timeout when creating network profile w/ large subnet

So I've been struggling to create a /16 network range as part of an External Network profile within vRA.  Not getting any errors within the catalina.out log file on the vRA appliance and no errors within the IaaS Windows server event logs.  Just for fun I decided to do some tinkering.

I have a NSX Edge Service Gateway already deployed with both the external and internal interfaces configured appropriately (Ext is /24 and Int is /16) and  L2 switch deployed and connected to the Int of the ESG.

1. I created an External Network profile with no network ranges attached - Worked just fine

2. I edited the network range to accommodate a /16 network range, 172.16.0.1 - 172.16.255.253  w/ a gateway of 172.16.255.254 (Int interface).  - No dice.  Received "Service Temporarily Unavailable (503) error.  It also took about 3-5 minutes to display the network range on the main page where I can click OK to commit the changes and save the network profile.

3. Deleted the External Network profile

4. Reconfigured ESG Int interface for a /24 subnet (172.16.0.254/24).

5. Deployed a new External Network Profile for the /24 subnet, a gateway of 172.16.0.254, and an available IP range of 172.16.0.1 - 172.16.0.253 - WORKS!!!!!

My vRA appliance has 2 procs, 8 GB of RAM and thick provisioned disks (saw a post about poor disk IOPS on thin disks causing I/O errors and the 503 error).  This appliance runs at no more than 5% CPU and 40% RAM.

My IaaS server is 2012 R2 with 2 CPUs and 4GB RAM with thin disks.  This server runs at no more than 50% CPU and 15-20% RAM.

Why I want to create a /16 network profile: Since I'm doing all this in a lab I don't need a "transport network" that supports up to ~16.77 million IP's, but I figured if the option was there, why not take advantage of it.

What's the largest transport network you all have created?  What bottlenecks have you seen that you need to adjust for in order to provision networks of that size?

Unmapping a LUN or Detaching it?

$

I've read the best practice about unmapping LUN's but I'm curious the difference between unmapping a datastore from the Datastores tab and detaching it from the Devices tab. Is it one and the same? Is the device detaching if its ONLY and RDM?  The devices option is a little more error friendly if you have multiple LUN's with the same ID. Just curious if unmounting it from one is the same as detaching it from the other since both seem to check for the same things and when you detach it's even calling it unmapping in vCenter.

Hello: I run OS10.8.5  with VMWare Ver 7.1.2.

The HDW is an iMac  24 in Early 2008  With 4GB memory and a 2.8ghz Core Duo

Ran fine last week. Since then I trashed an old copy of win2000 I had on the vol where Win 7 resides.

Upoon VMWare start up for Win 7 …I now get an error pane message :

Virtualized performance counters are not supported on the host CPU type.

Virtualized performance counters require architectural performance monitoring version 3 or greater.

Module VPMC power on failed.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

With an OK following the error pane.

Now I can't load Win 7. it is the only VM on the partition …

What could cause this?

ASD External Values / Labels

$

This is a combo vCAC / vRO question. Lets say  I want to have a field on my ASD form, with a type string, and a presentation of Radio Button Group.

I can define manually a list of elements (value AND label):

question1.png

What i want to do, is create this same behavior but use an external vRO action to define the list of values AND labels. So if i set my action to:

question3.png

I can get the list to populate correctly, by returning a Array/String from the action:

question2.png,

The problem is, it sets the value and the label to the same thing. I want to have a value set to X and a label set to Y. What should my return type be in order to achieve this?

Is there documentation somewhere listing what each ASD form type (checkbox list, date & time, list, dual list, radio button group, search, tree, map) expects for a return type, when set to an external action, in order to properly populate the item on the form?

Thanks as always,

Access vSphere Tag from API

Can someone point me in the right direction?  I have a group of Developers looking to be able to access the vSphere tags via a script (not PowerCLI) in Linux.

Can anyone give me the info on which API they should call and any hints on how they can go about doing so?

Thanks in advance!

Ever need the VM Serial Number?

I found myself in need of getting the serial number of a virtual machine and did not want to have to get inside the VM to get it so I have a little script that gets me this information from the vm object that I wanted to share in case this can help anyone else out.  in the script serial_number is the output and vm is the VC:VirtualMachine object

var serial_number = "VMware-"

var biosID = (vm.config.uuid.split('-').join(""))

var str = biosID

    a = [];

for (var i = 0; i < str.length; i += 2) {

    a.push(str.substr(i, 2));

  if (str.length = 30) { str += "-" } else { str += " " }

}

//System.log(a); // prints the array

//System.log(a.join(" ")); // turn the array into a string of hex values

//System.log(parseInt(a[1], 16)); // parse a particular hex number to a decimal value

var uid = (a.join(" "));

var trim = uid.split("-").join("")

serial_number += trim

VCSA 5.5 to 6.0 upgrade is changing FQDN

$

I'm getting this message during the upgrade process to 6.0 on our VCSA that I haven't seen in any of the guides I've read online:

vcenter issue.jpg

Will this have any affect on any fqdn-based connections we have to the appliance (e.g. our Citrix XenApp environment, Veeam) if we don't change the certificate and keep our static DNS entry for the VCSA the same?

Certificate expired on a server that only has the VMware client and VMware workstation

$

Our security scanners detected an expired vmware certificate on a server. The only products running on this server are VMware workstation and the vSphere client. I've looked through all the installed certificates and there are none from vmware. When I open a web browser and go to the servers IP using port 443 I get an invalid certificate message and viewing the certificate it shows it expired recently and was issued by VMware. Where can I find this certificate and what is it used for given the products installed on this system?

Where do the questions show in discussions section(s)?

I want to post for the BIG discussion section.. How do I do that?

Anyone using WSFC vCenter 6.0 with custom certs?

$

I am using Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) to protect my external Windows vCenter 6. Replacing the Machine SSL certs seems to be more complicated than with the other management nodes.

Replacing the certs with certificate-manager is not talking with WSFC when restarting the VMware services.

Does anyone have a system that works that will get the default certs replaced?

Thanks,

jason

it is supported! (link below)

Windows 10 guest causes linux host to almost lock up if autofs is running

$

After an upgrade of guest Windows 10 from tech preview to release version i am experiencing something weird:

As soon as Windows get past welcome screen guest becomes completely unresponsive, host almost unresponsive (it is possible to ctr-alt-F1, but it takes ~30 seconds to do so). top here shows high LA, vmware-vmx at 200%, automount at 100%, over time kthread and kworker processes start showing high cpu usage also. The only way out of this is to kill vmware-vmx. If i do service autofs stop prior to starting vmware then guest start and work normally without any problems. If i do service autofs restart prior to starting vmware it also works immediately , but if i try to start windows 10 guest a few hours later then it locks.

Workstation 11.1.2 build-2780323

host is debian wheezy 64-bit

guest is Windows 10 64-bit (allowed to use 4 out of 8 GB memory and 2 out of 4 cores)

autofs is configured to automount nfs shares

there is nothing suspicious in neither system or vmware logs (syslog is completely normal for vmware guest start, vmware log looks normal too except for repetitive

"GuestRpcSendTimedOut: message to toolbox timed out" at the end)

this particular VM files are not on autofs mountable location and shared folders are disabled so there is no reason for it to even try to touch automount.

I have tens of various Windows VMs and none of them ever exhibited something like this, this VM also was working without problems before update to release version of Windows 10.

What happens to the Machine record in the vRealize Automation/IaaS database following a destroy action?

$

What happens to the Machine record in the vRealize Automation/IaaS database following a destroy action?  Is the machine record retained or do all records pertaining to the machine get deleted?  Since the vRA database is not a CMDB system I'm thinking the only way to insure a machine lifecycle record is maintained following a destroy action is to leverage an external CMDB system.  Can someone please confirm?

Thanks!

Overriding vCenter/datacenter-level alarms?

$
0
0

Is it possible to configure an alarm such that it can override another alarm configured at a higher level?

Background: I'm new to an environment where the previous VMware admin left a few months ago, and there are some things that were implemented that I cannot undo for various reasons.  One of those is a datastore usage monitor that was done at the datacenter level rather than at the datastore level.

I am trying to roll out some new VMs with associated datastores that need to use the entire LUNs that they have been allocated (per the software providers' best practice).  These are 1TB LUNs and I need to configure as much of it as I can and still allow the VM to power up (so I figure about 1000GB).

However, doing this sets off the datastore usage alarm configured in vCenter.

There are quite a number of datastores in this environment, and the only way I can see this working is by removing the alarms at the datacenter level and reinstating them at the datastore level... unless there is a way to override them.  These are thick-provisioned LUNs, so they will not grow.

Note that I know I can disable *all* alarms at the datastore level, but this is not acceptable either.  I just want to *override* one.

Any thoughts appreciated.  Thanks.
