Unable to load configuration file '/vmfs/volumes/..../New Virtual Machine/New Virtual Machine.vmx'

$

We've built our first small VMware lab for messing around on.

We have two networked hosts but no free shared storage.

Decided to use a folder on a physical hard drive on a physical Windows 2012 server as a NFS share.

Share created - no problem.

Using vSphere Client version 6.5.0.10000:

Create new datastore, target NFS share - no problem.

Mount the datastore on both hosts - no problem.

Browse the datastore, create folders, move some files around - no problem.

At this point I assume my datastore is fully operational and I all required permissions are in place.

However - every time I try to create a new VM and target this datastore it fails with the following (slightly truncated for privacy) error:

Unable to load configuration file '/vmfs/volumes/....-0000-000000000000/New Virtual Machine/New Virtual Machine.vmx'.

To Google! was the cry - but I've failed to find any joyful nuggets of information on there

Can anyone help? Please?

Reconnecting a 6.0 host to vCenter with running VMs & vDS after duplicate DNS record

$

We have an ESXi 6.0 host that's got disconnected from its 6.0 vCenter, and we need to _safely_ reconnect it, as it has many running VMs on it. The error message is:

Cannot synchronize host xxxxxxxx. Disconnected from host. Reason: Cannot verify the SSL thumbprint.

We believe it became disconnected after an A-record was added to our DNS server with the same name as the host but with a different IP address. The record duplicate has been removed, but the host is still disconnected.
I am concerned that when we manually reconnect the host, the distributed networking may be disrupted and the running VMs will loose connectivity. I have read many articles that highlight issues with loosing vDS configuration when removing or adding a host to a vCenter.

VMware article "Reconnecting Hosts After Changes to the vCenter Server SSL Certificate" suggests the host should simply be re-connected, but it does not mention what happens to running VMs & use of vDS.
Perhaps there is another way we can have the host and vCenter communicate again easily? As mentioned, the duplicate A-Record no longer exists, and in theory, it should be ok.

The host is in a cluster, but there is no DRS/HA etc. enabled. Hosts are all added to vCenter using their FQDN.

Thank you for any help.

vsan stretched cluster network design

I need some help validating this Network config for a stretched cluster.

Ill summarize whats on the attached, not so good, diagram.

- cluster is running 6.7u1

- Each data site has Nexus vpc Pairs as cores.

- L2 between data site. the vsan vlan has an EIGRP advertised SVI which is part of an HSRP group with 4 members (1 SVI per nexus, so 2 per site) (this is one of the key things i want to validate)

- Each host has static route which uses the vsan SVI (10.10.1.0      255.255.255.0        10.10.0.0   vmk2       MANUAL) (want to make sure this is recommended or if i should use something else)

- das.usedefaultisolationaddress = false

- HA advance setting is configured with the following das.isolationaddress(1-4): IPs 10.10.0.2(Site A),  10.10.0.4(SiteB), 10.10.0.3(SiteA),  10.10.0.5(SiteB) in that order (want to validate this too)

- As you can see vsan witness traffic always flows through the primary site (sub optimal routing, not big deal unless HSRP fail-over time is too high and could cause vsan issues after a site failure while 10.10.0.1 becomes available again.

Questions:

1- Should i advertise (route) the vsan SVIs.

2- Can i use a different route for witness traffic to avoid traversing the ISL

3- Is the HA advanced settings (Isolation addresses) configured properly.

What would you recommend to improve this design. Dont be shy with the details .

I understand this is very networking "heavy" but that is what we have to deal with by using Ethernet based distributed storage systems which HCI is. As we always hear.. network reliability is key to HCI.

Thanks in advance folks!!

Looking forward to your responses.

When the VMware Horizon Client is connected to server and I am insert the USB device (Flash Disk or Smart Card Reader), I must to click the menu to access the device. (See attachment)

Settings "Automatically Connect at Startup" and "Automatically Connect when Inserted" are checked.

Is it possible to set automatic USB connection when inserted?

XaaS\Blueprint custom form - Request user to confirm input

Hi - noobie alert!

I'm looking to request user input, ie "Select VM", then prompt to confirm the selection, ie "Are you sure?" and handle the boolean true\false response using a Basic Decision in vRO to continue. I'd ultimately like to present this via a blueprint custom form.

Can anyone provide an overview of the steps I need to take to accomplish this?

Thanks,

Horizon View PCoIP connections over a WAF (Web Application Firewall) platform from Akamai

Hi,

We have a View 7.x environment. I have configured an F5 APM device to act as a gateway for connections from the internet (instead of UAG).

Now I am also required to onboard all external facing URLs of my company onto a WAF service provided by Akamai. This is where I have a problem. The WAF service does not support UDP. So once it verifies the TCP traffic during the initial authentication, it is not able to pass the UDP traffic. Akamai wanted us to use two separate channels - one for TCP and another for UDP. And I dont think this is possible with View.

Has anyone else had a similar requirement - to use a WAF service for their external URL? And how did you get it working?

Thanks

ESXI 6.0 compatibility

$

Hello,

I'm extremely new at setting up ESXI servers.
I've made the following system for the purpose (using ESXI 6.0 or above) :

Intel i3 8100
MSI z370-A PRO

2x 16 Gb DDR 4 RAM - 2400mhz
3x WD Red 1TB SATA
All in a standard full-size tower ATX box.

I wanted to run a RAID 1 volume on two of the hard drives. I found out the hard way that ESXI doesn't really support "software RAID" through my motherboard. I started looking at the compatibility list for ESXI 6.0. I found a cheap second hand Adaptec 2405 that seems to be compatible with ESXi 6.0.

I'm afraid of making another mistake with this build. Before I purchase the raid controller and try again I have the following questions:

1) Is it a problem that this raid controller is very old (released in 2011-2012). Should I expect hardware compatibility issues with a newer system ( I have DDR4 ram and an 8th gen processor)?
2) Intel i3 8100 doesn't seem to show anywhere in the ESXI compatibility list. Nor do any 8th gen processors. Is this going to be an issue?
3) Should I expect any issues with the fact that the build is in a tower case not a server one (the raid card not fitting properly)
4) In the requirements for this Raid controller, it states PCI 2.0 x8. I have a free PCI 3.0 x16, should I expect problems there?
5) Any other issue I'm not seeing?

Thanks in advance and excuse me if my questions are uninformed or this is not the correct section.

Strange thing : User dcui@127.0.0.1 logged in and out messages flooding in event list

In ESXi's hot web page's event list, nearly every minutes, there are messages saying "User dcui@127.0.0.1 logged in as" and immediately "User dcui@127.0.0.1 logged out". Even if I reboot the host, the messages continues. What does the message come from? 127.0.0.1 seems it comes from the host itself, why? What it is doing?

ESXi: 6.0.0 Update 3 (Build 5050593)

And, I inspected /var/log/hostd.log, it has more details:

Want to know the reason. And what is sub=Vimsvc.ha-eventmgr? is Vimsvc.ha-eventmgr related to High Availablity?

Thanks a lot!

Executing VMware Horizon Client on Raspbian Linux don't work!

Hello at all,

I have install the current Version of the VMware Horizon Client (5.2) on the current Raspbian Buster Distro.

The installation went smoothly. The subsequent scan was also error-free and the scan shows succesfull on all.

But now after the Installation I can not start the Client on the VMware Horizon Client Icon. I get only the hourglass which disappears after a short time.

I also tried to start the client  (vmware-view as command) via the console I there I will get this error:

/usr/bin/vmware-view: Zeile 167: /usr/lib/vmware/view/bin/vmware-view: Kann die Binärdatei nicht ausführen: Fehler im Format der Programmdatei

Does anyone have a Idee or Solution for that?

Thank you and Greetz!

Clone a VM by changing the file names

When I create a VM all the configuration files have the name of the VM.

When cloning this VM, a VM with a new name is created, but the original names are kept.

Is there a way to immediately create files with the correct name instead of being forced to rename them afterwards?

Workstation 15.5 for Linux, ESXi nested VM does not bridge to network

$

I have a host running on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. On the host, I have two network interfaces configured as bond0 with LACP. This networkadapters  are connected to the network switch configured as 802.3ad, LACP. The link is just configured for access one VLAN / subnet, no trunking dot1q. On the host I have installed Workstation 15.5.1. On the Workstation 15.5.1,  I have around 40 guest VMs of different OS, Linux and Windows, bridging to the host VLAN with static and DHCP IP address assignment. All this VMs works fine on this one VLAN. I can access all this VMs from Laptops connected to the same VLAN as the host.

In some cases I have to test VMs installed on ESXi. I installed a ESXi server under the Workstation 15.5.1. This works perfect. The ESXi server has static IP address from the host subnet. I can access the ESXi server from a Laptop with https://<ESXi IP address>. Bridging works fine. If I install a VM on this ESXi, it does not bridge to the host network. I tested with a Ubuntu 18.04 server installation. I tested with static and DHCP IP address assignment. DHCP IP assignment is not working. ICMP Ping to the default gateway is not replaying from the Ubuntu VM. From a Laptop I cannot ping the Ubuntu VM on the ESXi either.

I had a lot of search on google but couldn't find any solution to fix that. I made test with different kind of ESXi version 6.0, 6.5, 6.7. I used different network adapter next to the default VMXNET3. I change the default security configuration on the vSwitch and port-groups for promiscuous, MAC changes and  forget trans to accept. There is not firewall installed and active.

What can be done to bridge the VM on the ESXi  VM to the host subnet?

VCenter 6.5 U1 Console over RDP

Hi,

We can't access vcenter directly (security policy), so we have to establish RDP connection to jump host and than connect to vcenter. But over RDP vmware guest console is unusable, it eats characters some characters are unavailable and so on.

Without vmware tools (clean install) it is totally unusable, after tools it work better but  still bad. Is there any workaround or solution for given situation?

Thanks

PowerCLi script to get ClusterName | ClusterCapacity | ProvisionedSpace | ClusterOverProvision% | Host OS Type in a .csv file of a host cluster not datastore cluster.

$

Hi Team,

I am new to VMware and PowerCLi topics, I have 2 host clusters for these 2 clusters I would like to generate a .csv file in following format :

ClusterName | ClusterCapacity | ProvisionedSpace | ClusterOverProvision% | Host OS Type

If the host OS type is an Esxi version, then I don't need Esxi version. If host OS type not an Esxi version then i need Host OS Type in a separate column.

I would like to get the above result by using PowerCLi script.

Thanks in advance.
