ESXi 6.0 issue with LAN and storage

$

Hi guys!

I have this setup:

Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3

SuperMicro X10SLL-F

32gb @ 1600mhz ECC

LSI 8708EM2 256mb

1x Kingston USB3 8gb for OS (Onboard USB3)

2x WD Velociraptor 300gb RAID1 (VM Datastore)

3x WD Red 2TB RAID 5 (Datastore for second HDD in FileServer VM)

Here's my issue I got right now:

1. I tried installing lastest VIB for LSI card, I tried a couple of tutorial over the internet, to get the LSI storage Manager working, but I can't get it working. Is it possible on 6.0? or I need to passthrought the LSI card to the VM? I sent an email to LSI, but I doubt they will answer fast for a old product like this

2. I have 2 Network card: 1x Intel® i217LM & 1x Intel® i210AT. When I add the i217VLM to the VM Network, I loose access to the host, it won't ping. What's strange, is that it works fine under Windows 2012 R2 teamed. When I go on the host, uncheck the management for vmnic1, it working again. And it seems now, since the update, that I have network, but failover or simple load balance isn't working. When I unplug the network cable, no ping to the management or VM. Funny as I configure ESXi all the time at work for customer, and can't get mine (custom computer) to get it working haha

Any help would be appreciated

edit: vmnic0 is using igb driver, vmnic1 is using e1000e, just for info

moving a VM between Mac and Windows

I have a windows 7 guest VM sitting on Mac OS 10.6, using VMware fusion 3.0.

Is the guest VM file portable, such that I could take it to a windows-based host running VMware (workstation, I assume)?

Thanks!

Fusion 7 vs Fusion 8

I’ve been using Fusion since version 3 and I’m currently using Fusion 7 with Windows VM’s from Win 95 to Win 10 (both an upgrade and Windows Insider). There are also OS X and Linux VM’s.

I bought the upgrade to Fusion 8 during the brief sale when it was first released but haven’t installed it yet on my production drive. Both v7 and v8 are the latest (and probably the last) updates and both are the Pro versions. The host is a Mac Pro with 32GB of RAM, six cores and twelve threads; the production drive is running Yosemite and the test drive is El Capitan, on which v7 seemed to work quite well before the v8 upgrade test. I've been following the posts about v8 problems since it was introduced and am not wanting to break a working system. While v7 is on an SSD, the test installation of v8 is on an external HD so it's not really possible to make a reasonable speed comparison.

Since I suspect most Forum members have moved from v7 to v8, I’m asking if you’ve seen any real benefit from the move. Would v8 make better use of more assigned RAM, processors and shared graphics memory? Has disk shrink or reclaimable disk space been improved? Has Intel VT-x with EPT been improved (Win 7 with XP Mode)? Are there new features which have proved useful beyond product differentiation?

I tend to believe if it works, leave it alone, so it seems wise to ask the experts first.

Hi All ,

we have build two platform Service controllers in HA mode . We are trying to install the vCenter server and we are getting the below error message.

VCSCAValidateRemoteSSO: Unable to retrieve remote SSO version: 12029

2016-03-30 17:07:16.656+11:00| vcsInstUtil-2656758| I: PitCA_MessageBox: Displaying message: "The VMware vCenter Server installer could not verify that the remote vCenter Single Sign-On server is of version 6.0.0 or later. Check whether the remote vCenter Single Sign-On server is reachable and is of version 6.0.0 or later."

Has anyone in the community run vcenter server 6 in HA mode with the PSC controllers sitting behing the f5 load balancer ? please share your thoughts if you have seen any similar issue.

Thanks .

running Windows downloads on MAC

i have downloaded TurboTax 2015 to my MAC, for execution in VMWare 6.06.  I can see the download on the MAC, but cannot make it run in the Windows VM.  How do I get the download to "transfer" to the Windows VM so it will execute?

Expand or move the virtual machine to another partition/ hard disk

I tried to expand my disc to 90 gb but nothing change, i.e. the vm still remains with 60 gb. I've VMware Fusion 6 (Mac/Windows 10) and my vm is in monolithic mode. In this actual HD I still have 50 gb free and I can't increase the amount again to try to regularise this issue and I can't to decrease it either. I thought to change the vm location to the another partition/hd with more space but I don't know how. So, I need some help to choose and implemente one of the solutions below:

- or regularise the space to the new amount

- or move the vm (vmdk) to another HD/partition

- or convert the monolithic mode to 2GB split

What's the better solution?

Thanks in advance

Poor network bandwith idn Win2012R2

We have ESXi 6.0 and Windows Server 2012R2 machines. They are having latest VMWare Tools installed and are usin VMXNET3 network adapter.

One of machines is hosting MS AX Dynamics AOs server.

When we issue axbuild command to compile AOS, the network preformace is very slow (arround 2-5 Mbs). During build the ASO server is establishind a lto of connections to MS SQL Server. The total compile time is 13 hours.

After we have installe Wireshark (v2.01) inf WinPcap driver, the network performacne increase to avverage 120 Mbs, sometimes to 400Mbs. The overall compile time was only 21 minutes.

We don't know what is WinPCAp driver doing on TCP stack, but it increses performacne. Our goal is to runn server without wrieshark installed. Are there any special settings in VMXNET3 driver?

Virtual Machine running in VMWare Vsphere Hypervisor- AutoStart option gets disabled by itself after power outages

Hi,

I'm running Windows 10 Virtual Machine in VM ware vsphere hypervisor and I want the VM to auto start in the case of power outage, after doing some searching I found out that it can be done in the Configuration tab in Vsphere client and I did as it is. I enabled Auto start option and while testing I restarted the server but the VM never started by itself and when I check the setting Automatic startup option was disabled. I tried changing the delay from 120 seconds to 10 seconds and with no delay but still there was no change. Whenever I restarted my server the Autostart option gets disabled.

FYI I'm just running one Virtual machine (Windows 10) and I want it to Autostart in power outage scenario. Any help would be appreciated. And I'm using Vsphere client 6.0

Thanks

vR Ops Version 6.2.0.3445568 Guest File System Stats not working

HI all,

My first post here and new to vR Ops.

I am trying to set up a view where I can see all Linux VMs whose / partition is over 90% full (or even 10% full for that matter).  My problem is that while the view picks up some servers correctly, it does not have any idea about / partition usage for most Linux VMs.  The way I have set it up is

  • Start new view
  • Give it a name
  • Choose "List" in Presentation tab (only need two columns so deleted columns 3 and 4)
  • Choose "Virtual Machine" in Subjects
  • in Data, choose "Guest File System stats --> / --> Guest File System Usage (%).  This example is attached below

Untitled.png

  • Then in the filter I filtered for Metrics; Guest Filesystem stats|Guest File Systme Usage (%); is greater than; 10%

After this, I selected one of my ESXi servers as preview source but out of ~110 Linux servers, I only see 10 servers with / partition usage above 10% but I know for a fact that this is wrong.  All Linux servers in my environment, come out at around 14% upon provisioning.

Am I doing something wrong?  Does vR Ops need some time to pickup the changes from the VMs?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello,

I would configure flash read cache on one of my ESXi 6u2 hosts.  First, I made sure my local disk is SSD enabled :

Second, if I want to add capacity the list is empty :

Update to Office 2013 Appstack breaks activation

$

It appears that performing an 'update' to the Office Appstacks may break activation. I'm guessing this is due to the KMS product key getting wiped out in the process. Since end users have no rights to modify the Office product key, let alone activate office, we are left with one option which is to create a new Appstack, install Office fresh, then apply the new Office patches. The same goes for updating Office Appstacks to include third party plugins.

Has anyone else seen this and know of a sensible solution outside of installing the Office apps within the parent image (and introducing many more pools to manage)?

ESXi 6.0U1a build 3073146 vpxa crashing randomly, host disconnected from vCenter

After recently upgrading vCenter and ESXi to 6.0U1a and installing all patches (now build numbers 3018524 and 3073146 respectively), we began experiencing random host disconnects from vCenter.  The host itself and all guests on it are still alive when it's disconnected; I can SSH to the host and RDP/SSH to guests.  If I literally do nothing, it eventually fixes itself and rejoins vCenter within 15-20 minutes.  We did not have this issue prior to upgrading to 6.0U1a.  This is not the "NETDEV WATCHDOG: vmnic4: transmit timed out" issue.  In fact, the reason we upgraded to the latest build was to get the fix for that particular issue.

I've personally witnessed this happen now on three different hosts and never has it reoccurred on the same host twice that we have noticed.  The vmkernel.log simply shows:

2015-11-18T20:56:42.662Z cpu12:173086)User: 3816: wantCoreDump:vpxa-worker signal:6 exitCode:0 coredump:enabled

The vpxa.log doesn't show anything building up to the disconnection and leaves a large gap after the agent crashes, like so:

vCenter logs simply show the host becoming unreachable so the problem is obviously host-side.

Anyone else seeing similar activity?  This has all the feel of another "known issue" but I don't see any talk about it.  I did open a case with VMware support and am awaiting contact now.
