Horizon View Client; "Maximum login attempts exceeded"

$

Hello,

if users type in a wrong password or username three times, VMware Horizon View Client displays a window saying "The View Connection Server authentication failed. Maximum login attempts exceeded"

When clicking "OK" in mentioned window, nothing really happens. All it does is it closes the session to the connection server and goes back to the first window where you have to enter the connection server and connect.

My question is, where can this be changed? Can the maximum login attempts be increased/decreased? I couldn't find any setting anywhere...

Thanks,

Choppy Audio/Video in VMware View 5.2 Desktop

Hi,

I have a View 5.2 environment set up for a pilot program. Everything is great except for audio/visual (A/V) performance. Streaming A/V is choppy and difficult to understand. I have applied the pcoip.adm GPO templates and replaced the VMware audio driver with the teradici audio driver. Audio is great if there is no video and vice-versa. I am using Samsung NC-241-T zero clients as the endpoints for the users. All with dedicated 1 Gbps connections. The sound is being heard through either a digital USB headset w/mic or an analog equivalent. We have been all over the Windows settings for sound and such. The master image was created along the linees of VMware's optimization guide.

Is there anything else I can tweak to get the A/V up to an acceptable level? A/V applications are a major point for the pilot program.

Thanks in advance

ESXi 5.5 & The vCenter Server Appliance

We have recently installed ESXi 5.5 and the vCenter Linux Appliance.  The ESXi server is set up the way the documentation says, with multiple networks assign for different tasks, service console, vMotion, storage, etc.  I "THINK" everything is set up correctly, but I can not get my vCenter Appliance to see the ESXi server.  The network that the ESXi host is on, is not listed as an available option when I add a NIC to the vCenter Appliance.

On previous versions of ESX, the network that the ESX host was available when I needed to add a NIC to the vCenter server.  Is there something that I am missing?  Does this sound like an issue anyone else has had? Or am I just missing a simple step?

How to get VM status programatically?

Hello,

We are doing a scheduled refresh of all of our linked clones once a week on Sunday midnight. Now I'd like to programatically check for all the VM desktops if they are in allowed state.

Allowed state would be "Available", "Connected" or "Disconnected".  So I'm searching for information visible in View manager under the 'Status' column in Inventory View.

I was thinking of writing powershell script for this task but I'm finding there isn't simple way to do this. Or is it? It looks script should combine results from Adam base and View Connection server. Is there any simpler way to do this? E.g: Get-DesktopVM -Name "VMname" | Get-Status ?

Tnx for help & recommendations.

ESXi 5 hangs with Adaptec controllers (aacraid: Host adapter abort request)

Hi There,

I have a couple of ESXi 5 boxes running controllers (one 6805 and one 5805Z).  I have been experiencing hanging with ESXi randomly (seemingly after heavy load) from time to time over the last several months.  When the hang occurs, I see contentiously scrolling error messages "SCSILinux AbortCommands: 1798:Failed, Driver aacraid." The only way to recover is by hard resetting the host.

After working with Adaptec for the last couple of months, trying different drivers, firmware (now officially available for both 6805 and 5805Z controllers), they have pointed me to the article below (Adaptec Answer ID 15357).  They told me to contact VMware about making the adjustment since they have no information on how to make the adjustment within ESXi.  Does anyone know how to correctly implement this adjustment?

Error: "aacraid: Host adapter abort request"
Question
The Linux server shows the following error messages:
aacraid: Host adapter abort request (4,0,1,0)
aacraid: Host adapter reset request. SCSI hang ?

What can be done to resolve this issue?

This information applies to the following Operating System(s):

- Linux Kernel 2.6.18 and later
Answer
AACRAID based controllers have an underlying timeout/recovery cycle that is 35 seconds long.

The default in some SCSI subsystems was 60 seconds in the past, but is now standardized at 30 seconds which results in an interference pattern between the controller and the Linux SCSI subsystem.

The alternate workaround is for the user to adjust the timeout in SYSFS if it is shorter than 35 seconds.

Changing the timeout values for a Linux block device can be done via SYSFS. For example, if /dev/sdc , /dev/sdd and /dev/sde are the device LUNs on a given Linux host, then the following commands need to be issued:
echo 45 > /sys/block/sdc/device/timeout
echo 45 > /sys/block /sdd/device/timeout
echo 45 > /sys/block/sde/device/timeout
In this example the timeout is 45 seconds which should be enough.

Note:Any AACRAID based controller is going through an error correction cycle on the SAS/SATA bus that is delaying the completion of I/O beyond the Linux default timeout set for the device, this may be a hardware issue or a problem with the default timeout value as outlined above. If changing the timeout value doesn't solve the problem then please follow the steps we recommend to trouble shoot "Host adapter reset request. SCSI hang ?" messages:
  • Check for any updated firmware for the motherboard, controller, targets and enclosure on the respective manufacturer's web sites.
  • Check per-device queue depth in SYSFS to make sure it is reasonable.
  • Engage disk drive manufacturer's technical support department to check through compatibility or drive class issues.
  • Engage enclosure manufacturer's technical support department to check through compatibility issues.

Java Apps appear half width in VMs accessed through RDP

Hello,

I created a Win7x64 VM and installed Java on it (currently build 1.7.0_45-b18).

When I access the VM through VCD under FireFox, and then open the Java Control Panel (or run a Java app), everything looks fine.

But, if I access the VM through RDP and then open the Java Control Panel (or run a Java app), the app is squished horizontally to occupy only the first half of the area, and it has a green background.

Here's an example:

http://i.imgur.com/laNG53C.jpg

I've changed the resolution settings in the VM from upwards of 1920x1080 down through 1024x768 with the same results.

I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Java.

Has anyone else encountered this or have a suggestion on correcting it?

Thanks in advance for any help,

- Tom

How to send Ctrl-RightClick to guest in VMWare Player?

I am running VMWare Player 6 on CentOS 6.5. I created a Ubuntu 12.04 guest and installed gnome-fallback-session so that the guest is running gnome 3 rather than unity (which looks like a smart phone). In order to add and item to the gnome panel I must use Alt-RightClick on the panel. This works on physical Ubuntu 12.04/gnome machines. It does not work on the virtual machine. I get NO response to Alt-RightClick.

I have found various short cuts to send VMWare "reserved" key combinations to a guest but nothing about sending a keyboard and mouse combination. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

TIA,

Ken

Virtual NICs: Only 1 Gbit or better more?

$

Hi !

We have virtualized most of our physical servers this year.

All in all we have around 40 virtual servers now.

Our clients are all connected with simple 1 Gbit NICs.

Before most of our servers were connected with several aggregated NICs.

But now we have just 1 Gbit virtual NIC per server, which i don't really like.  Considering actually 1 client can congest 1 server with network traffic.

Our IT consultant told us that it would be bad to exchange those virtual 1 gbit NICs against a 10 Gbit ones, coz that would maybe cause too heavy load on the Storage.

So what about aggregating several 1 Gbit NICs, like 2 or 3?

Is that basically a good idea?

Our storages are G8 Datacore servers with mixed 10k and 15k SAS disks.   And our physical server equipment is a HP C3000 Bladesystem, connected with 2x 10 Gbit to our LAN and per FC to the Datacore servers.

Any suggestions?

Thx in advance,

ND.

Vsphere management web client on 5.5 - slow, buggy, I do not trust it - and we are forced to use it?

Greetings all I have a new ESxi 5.5 box (70,400 mhz) all good HW. Downloaded the 1.8Gb vcenter/vsphere web client, set it up, got it running on it's own dedicated 840 Pro SSD (local) with 8 cpus.

Went into new web gui created a new vSwitch, added (2) Nics to it, finish. Buggy web display doesn't show it!! How am I suppose to trust this new "great" web gui?  And we are forced to use this crap?

When I go into the old Windows based simple, clean, reliable vSphere win32 client it shows them as configured and fine. I wish they would keep management to simple proven reliable tools, not a buggy, slow overladen with tons of Java poured all over everything.   I think the "web" client at first login reads like 6Mb+ of data across the wire, yes I see you can download yet more software to speed that up..

Nice that I'll have to SSH into my local box to verify (if I even can) what was "supposed to have happened" with web gui commands.

Any suggestions/tips on what to do would be appreciated.  I am really trying to embrace this new web management deal, but I don't trust it any farther than I can throw it.

I may just scrap this and go back to 5.1..

Automate Mirage tasks

Hi Guys,

do you know a way to automate Mirage tasks, in particular:

- Deploy applications when CVD appear in specific Dynamic Collection

- Trigger script upon joining/leaving Dynamic Collection

- Automate Endpoint centralization, Reboot, Suspend, etc.

Also I am looking for solution of the following tasks:

- Deinstallation of applications from Mirage, ideally automated again

- Adding in a Dynamic Collection in case the Endpoint is not a member of a domain.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Buoansera,

ho una macchina fisica con Windows Server 2008 Foundation Edition che vorrei virtualizzare, su un documento di Microsoft ho letto:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation is licensed to run only in a physical operating system environment.

anche se poi cercando nella rete ho letto che è possibile virtualizzarlo, è così o ci sono delle limitazioni che me lo impediscono ?

Grazie.

vCO 5.5 Linux Customisation not setting DNS Servers

$

Hi there,

I have recently deployed the vCO 5.5 appliance, and I'm having problems trying to figure out why my DNS servers are not being populated in /ets/resolv.conf.

I'm using the built-in Clone, Linux with single NIC workflow to clone a CentOS 6.4 template. In my workflow, as an input to the Clone, Linux with single NIC workflow, I am passing an Array/String value of my two DNS servers. I can run this workflow no problems, the VM deploys and settings like hostname, IP address, Netmask and Gateway are set - just not DNS servers.

If I run cat /etc/resolv.conf I get nothing, not even comments in the file. Name resolution fails as a result.

FYI - in my CentOS VM, I'm not using NetworkManager. I have read that vCD customisation and DNS can not play together if NetworkManager is enabled. I have checked this in my template and I can confirm I'm not using NetworkManager.

Logs from the workflow run don't show anything revealing (from /var/log/vco/app-server/server.log)

vDGA / vSGA - Is VMware View Required?

$

Hello,

Should be a quick question for someone who has used either vDGA or vSGA.

Can these forms of graphics acceleration be used on a bog standard ESXi 5.1 host running standard VMs (i.e. not in a VMware/Horizon View environment).

I have a customer who wants to run some beefy graphics application on their VMs but only needs a single ESXi host and say 6 VMs. Can this be done with a standalone ESXi host or is an Horizon View environment required to take advantage of vDGA / vSGA?

Cheers,

Ross

Failed to connect to VDP file level recovery client

$

Hello,

I'm trying to connect to the file level recovery client of a VDP appliance from a virtual machine backuped by this appliance.

Unfortunately after writing my local machine administrator credentials and after clicking on the connection button I got this error message (I'm translating a part from French) : "Connection failed. Insufficient permissions in the host operating system".

To clear out some points:

- VMware tools are installed on the VM

- ESX version is 4.1.0

- VSphere web client version is 5.1

- All the routes are opened between the VM and the appliance

- The VM operating system is windows with NTFS partitions

I really don't know where does this problem come from... Is it a grant problem? Should I open some flows between my appliance and any source/destination?

Thank you to anyone that might have any idea or proposal in order to solve this problem!

Kind Regards,

McPicsou.

VDP snapshot leftovers after vdp data store power failure:

Hi.

I had a power failure and data store where VDP 5.1. appliance resided was powered off while creating a scheduled backup. After that i could not create backups anymore and after some blind tweaks vdp appliance did not start anymore. There was a problem with snapshot disks it could not open anymore, so i removed those disks but as i'm not a vmware professional i'm not sure if i should delete corresponding files. VDP started up but when i initiated a backup it was complaining that "operation failed due to existing snapshot". How can i know if i can delete those vmdk files left from snapsots? Can i just assume that if i don't see any snapshots in snapshot manager and snapshot vmdk file has modification date some hours or days back in the past then i can just delete them safely?

Sorry for my English.

VMWare Workstation 7.1.4 .vmdk corrupted in Windows

$

The physical hard disk that the virtual disk was located on was disconnected from the host machine.  This happened whilst deleting a snapshot image from the virtual disk belonging to the guest machine.  This corrupted the state of the virtual disk and resulted in being unable to successfully boot into the guest OS.

Now, when I try to power on the guest machine, I receive the following message:

Cannot open the disk 'Z:\vm\Windows 2000 VM6-000003.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

I have all the existing .vmdk's but do not know how to repair this virtual disk to recover the data on it.  It cannot be mounted with VMWare's in-built virtual disk mounter.  The error states there is a problem loading the volume.

I cannot open the .vmdk with a text editor to modify the CID because the file is too large (>6GB).

I'm using only VMWare Workstation 7.1.4 to manage some simple virtual machines for legacy purposes, on Windows 8.1, so my setup is not too complex.

If anyone can help show me how to repair these disks, I'd very much appreciate it.
