Hi!
I am observing time running away in virtual machines on Workstation 11.0.
I am starting Windows 7. Clock starts, say 9:00:00 after running for about 10 Minutes, the wall clock shows 9:10:00, while Windows 7 guests are at 9:20:xx! Same for other guests: Linux, FreeBSD particular. Same setup, all had time reset at 9:00:00. Time was synchronized using NTP:
- Windows 7: wall clock: 9:10:00, Windows 7 clock: 9:41:00 -> NTP and W32Time didn't sync time any more: offset to high
- CentOS 6.5: wall clock: 9:10:00, CentOS 6.5 clock: 9:24:50 -> NTP didn't sync time any more: no suitable server
- CentOS 7.0: wall clock: 9:10:00, CentOS 7.0 clock: 9:22:56 -> NTP didn't sync time any more: no suitable server
- Ubuntu 14.04: wall clock: 9:10:00, Ubuntu 14.04 clock: 9:13:04 -> NTP kept offset at about 3 minutes
- FreeBSD 11: wall clock: 9:10:00, FreeBSD clock: 9:10:27 -> NTP didn't sync time any more: no suitable server. With local clock a "real world minute" was about 66 FreeBSD seconds.
- NetBSD 8: wall clock: 9:10:00, NetBSD clock: 9:10:01 -> NTP kept offset at about one second or beyond.
Synchronizing time with VMware Tools showed up neary the same results, but Time ran away slower: it took longer to get the clocks between host and guest out of sync:
- Windows 7: wall clock minute is at about 70(!) seconds guest time
- CentOS 6.5: wall clock minute is at about 63 seconds guest time
- CentOS 7.0: wall clock minute is at about 64 seconds guest time
- Ubuntu 14.04: wall clock minute is at about 61 seconds guest time
- FreeBSD 11: wall clock minute is at about 62 seconds guest time
- NetBSD 8: wall clock minute is at about 61 seconds guest time
Without any synchronization time was not predictable. It ran ahead sometimes, then stalled, lagging behind. At a long hoult it got behind for all guests. After 24 hours running all guests had lost about 2 hours -- except Windows: it was 5 hours behind.
Any idea what is going on here? Since the very same runs seamlessly over hours, days, weeks with NTP on an ESXi Host with the very same zoo of operating systems -- any others seeing this with Workstation 11? It's quite not amusing while testing kerberos integration depending on same date and time on all guests!
